Local notes report a Liberal meeting planned at the Opera House tonight while Arbor Day events proceed at Central School. Other items include farming reports, church services, school events, and local civic notices from Barrie and nearby towns.
The late John Cameron aged 58 died Friday at Royal Victoria Hospital after kidney trouble. Born in Toronto, he was the second son of the late Keineth Cameron of Vespra and lived at the Grenfel homestead. Survived by three brothers and one sister, he was a Presbyterian and a staunch Reformer. His funeral Sunday at 2:30 p.m. from his late residence.
Debenture by law to raise money for cement value delayed again at Monday session due to lack of full council. Ald. McLean moves to defer while awaiting broader attendance. other aldermen assent. From her late residence 615 Ontario street funeral services were held this afternoon for Mrs William Revell wife of Mr Wao Revell of the Crown Lands Department She died suddenly last evening heart failure followed a day of shopping in downtown Toronto She was a noted concert singer and long a member of the Metropolitan church choir later joining Zion Congregational church Her popularity and wide circle of friends were noted Also announced is Mr Robinette a prominent Toronto speaker at the Grand Opera House tonight.
Archbishop O Connor of Toronto will visit the St Marys Deanery next week for three days, marking his official visitation to the Deanery and nearby parishes. The parish of Barrie reports 306 families and over 1600 souls. Rav Father Jeffcott left for Stayner. Ladies Altar Society improved interiors, secured new carpeting. A sacred concert by over 100 Separate School children, led by Sisters of St Joseph, was a success with Miss Dalton at the piano. Fr Jeffcott preached on the Blessed Virgin from the Magnificat. An May devotion framed the event with a large offering for the Ladies Altar Society.
Robi McKinley, son of the late J A McKinley, died suddenly in Houghton Michigan on Saturday morning after a brief illness with hemorrhage. He was 21 and worked in mining. He leaves siblings Mrs Grant Knapp John McKinley of Minesing and Wm McKinley of Allandale. The body was moved to Minesing for funeral services on Tuesday afternoon. Relatives express deep sympathy.
Hilton son of Rev. C. S. Pedley narrowly escaped serious harm when a bicycle collision at Five Points near Clapperton and Dunlop streets caused a shaft to grazed his side and lift him from the bike. He clung to the shaft until the horse halted at Simcoe Hotel stables with only twisted handlebars. No injuries reported.
The Barrie Curling and Athletic Club held a meeting at the Vespra Hotel. Alex Brownlee elected chairman and Donald Ross secretary. Subscriptions totaled 2160 with 20 percent monthly payments starting June 1. Project aims include a $2500 rink and lot, plans and tenders by Sept 1, with a lease to lawn bowlers and tennis players. Barrie Carling Club winded up. balance 323 shown and 2357 in membership fees. $10 voted to Seny Nee lands. thanks to Geo Hogg for ice upkeep.
Mrs. John A McLean mourns the drowning of her brother George Minty at Pinewood Rainy River District on April 20. He and his father’s men were removing railway ties and rafting them downstream when control was lost and he was swept to the rapids. Minty, 21, helped on the farm near Dalston, and this marks a second family tragedy after a prior fatal shooting five years earlier. Widespread sympathy goes to the Minty family.
The Grand Opera House will host Chas Coglan's The Royal Box on Monday evening May 26 with the full New York cast special scenery and costumes. It is billed as the season’s last dramatic attraction with full particulars to follow.
