Barrie Council Debates Market Freedom and Queen s Hotel Ruins

Mayor Craig led a short council session on market regulation opposing a buyers license as Mr Vair argued for freedom at the Barrie market. The meeting also addressed Lake Simcoe Hotel ruins on Dunlop Street, attempts to force cleanup, and a request to hire firemen overtime pay and town electricity plans with the Hydro Electric Association.

Barrie Relief Shop reports March events and band notes

The Barrie Red Cross Shop plans a packing slate for March 15 with rooms ready by March 14. At the March 5 meeting Barrie Brench kept tea prices at 10 cents, and donations from Holly, Stroud, Allandale Churches, and the G T R Engineers Auxiliary supported shop needs and proceeds. A letter from Lieut Col MacLaren details the 157th Overseas Battalion Band instruments return, ship plans, and praise for the town of Orillia and its citizens.

National Service Cards extended to March 31 1917

The time for returning National Service cards is extended to March 31 1917. Additional cards have been issued to post masters for distribution to those who default. Returns in this Military District are gratifying though some residents have not yet complied. The National Service Board urges everyone to complete their returns as nearly perfect as possible.

Real hockey comes to Barrie next Wednesday evening

Barrie residents can see a real hockey match next Wednesday at 7 30 as the Sentimental Seven faces Miss Stotesbury's Gentle Seven in what promises a battle royal. Fans urged to attend and cheer, with skating for the public following at 8 30 and the 177th Band in attendance.

Longtime G T R engineer John Gibson retires with clean record

John Gibson of Collingwood retires from the G T R after forty years, ending a career that began as a call boy on the Northern. He rose to engine driver on the Toronto to Collingwood route and the Collingwood-Beeton run, highlighted by a 32 minute Allandale to Collingwood trip during the World Fair. Gibson, now honored with an annual pass for himself and Mrs. Gibson, leaves the cab as the oldest engineer on the Barrie division.

Report details French relief efforts from April 15 1915 to March 1 1917. New garments mainly from Secours National Toronto 3085 hospital supplies 35786 layettes 30 second hand clothing 911 quilts 78 and money 243.00 given monthly since July 1916 by St. Andrews Military Hospital Club Patriotic Circle Guthrie Girls Sewing Circle and others. Guthrie Girls supplied machine made socks and Dr Wells provided the splenoid room for the Patriotic Circle Room appreciation notes.

Appeal Dismissed in Barrie Board and Medical Costs Case

Court of Appeal judges Meredith Riddell Lennox and Ferguson handed down judgment on Thursday. The appeal by the Town of Barrie from a 1916 York County Court judgment involved recovering 234 dollars for board and medical care of Hazel Thomas, an indigent resident. Trial court had dismissed against Vespra and Simcoe with no costs and awarded Barrie 234 dollars. Appeal dismissed with costs.

Armouries report the 177th Battalion preparing for overseas duty with an eastward departure expected daily. Barrie detachment led a route march to Shanty Bay on Feb 28 under Major G R Rodgers. village welcome, lunch hosted by Oro ladies, and a band concert followed return to the Armouries.
