AROUND TOWN notes bargain day at Irwin's with ads for mattresses, suits, and dry goods. Park and Hunter Bros. advertise big June sales with half price lines and price drops. Rev J J Wheatley preached for Dr Ockley. Mrs J McL Stevenson and Jos Swan mentioned. June garden party planned by Vespra Parish ladies. A football injury, rail delays, and weather data appear amid local business notices and public events.
Local society roundup reports Miss Rita Lount visiting friends in Toronto with Elliott Grasett from Toronto town and several others traveling between Barrie and Toronto. Residents mention include Mrs Grasett, Misses Connolly, Mrs Fraser, and Miss Kennedy of Detroit enjoying time at home. Harolds and doctors noted.
Tuesday evening’s event drew fair attendance as ministers Revs J G Silcox Toronto C Claris Edgar Thornley Sinclair and Chapman of Barrie spoke brief addresses after opening exercises led by Revs Sinclair and Claris. Reverend Silcox’s hour long talk on the worth of the church to the community captivated all, while Rev Gipkin’s future energy noted for Barrie.
Six civil cases and two criminal matters occupied County Court, with no grand jury business. Fowlis of Collingwood faced liquor selling to a minor, defense by G W Bruce, verdict of acipnit tal. Steele v Barons over a horse sale note, verdict for Steele for full amount and costs. John G Richardson v Rowat settled for $75. Dixon on Truesdale suit transferred to Collingwood. Roas v Cook involved wage claim and counterclaims. plaintiff awarded $112. Martin v Detonkey and King v Nicholson noted for judgments. several cases await further argument or judgment.
Surprise greeted the sale of Hobley Bros lease and stock to Byron King of Toronto and Sarjeant Smith. The transfer creates Sarjeant & King a separate firm to expand fur and men’s furnishing lines with extended premises. July takeover and sale of grocery stock planned. King, son of Chief King, brings Toronto fur trade experience.
W 3 Jacobs son of Samuel Jacobs of Toronto received his degree at Toronto University Convocation on Friday January 7. A Minesing native educated at Minesing Public School and Barrie Collegiate, he completed a four year Ontario Agricultural College course and excelled in May examinations. He served two summers guiding farm work at Mimico Industrial School and was chosen to represent OAC at a Toronto University dinner. He accepted a position at Arkansas State College Fayetteville as assistant teacher of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry starting January 14. His elder brother F S Jacobs of La Pecan has been appointed manager of the Winniver edition of the Farmer's.
Alderman Jackson led the Monday night session as Barrie Town Council approved a bylaw fixing licenses for pedlars hawkers and petty traders. Foot traders pay 50 dollars yearly, 100 dollars with horse and wagon, fruit and peanut vendors 10 dollars, daily licenses 10 dollars, with 20 to 50 dollar fines. The Mayor withheld street work on Holgate Street until transfers are filed. Several park and street projects were approved or discussed, with water and grading works proposed and park maintenance debated.
