Barrie flower lovers look to the annual Horticultural Society show next Tuesday in Town Hall. Judging begins after two pm with exhibits open to the public later. The Novice Class and a small-grower class encourage entrants from all gardeners. All entries must be in by 2 pm with reception starting at 8 am.
Barrie observes Civic Holiday with many residents leaving town for weekend escapes to Wasagan Beach Shanty Bay Big Bay Point and Tent City. Picnics dancing and bathing are noted while town theatres offer entertainment including Campbell Nuen at Grand Opera House and films at New Dreamland.
A notice to Yorkshire Worsted Company shareholders states a general meeting will be held in Barrie at Stewart & Stewart offices on Monday at 1 p.m. The agenda includes receiving a statement of affairs and electing directors, preceded by a Toronto directors’ meeting.
Magistrate Jeffs expressed amazement at the extreme youth of two juvenile offenders aged six and seven who admitted killing three ducks owned by Earl Livingston of Eccles Street. A suspended sentence was imposed with a warning to parents. no court costs or reimbursement were required.
Queen's Park hosted a large weekly band concert under a mellow August moon with an audience estimated over two thousand. Bandmaster Boyd Sylvester presented a well balanced program including the Baracole from Tales of Hoffmann. Police, including Officer Bowman, reported little disturbance.
Traffic stayed orderly despite heavy Saturday congestion from the Royal Black Knights celebration. Police credit their steady patrols and smart traffic management for preventing any mishaps.
Chief R King reports Toronto police hold Earl Cooper of 98 Gould Street after Barrie court charged him with stealing a suit from Leslie Dancey of Toronto. Cooper alias Earl Young left Toronto with 38 dollars in cash and four shirts missing from Bucke before heading to Bradford. Dancey, who rented a room at 60 Beverley Street, had not worked for the Ontario License Department as claimed.
A County Council sub committee decided on Friday that hardwood floors will not be installed in the court room or the county council room. The noisier flooring would be inappropriate. About $8,000 will be spent by project completion. Attending were Deputy Reeve Wm. Rusk of Barrie, Chairman, Reeve Jamieson of Nottawasaga, Reeve T. E. Smith of Flos, Deputy-Reeve Martin of Innisfil, Reeve McKinley of Oro.
Mrs. Neil Bell of 8th concession Oro raises a red fruit called the strawberry raspberry that tastes like both berries. She sold some on Barrie market last Saturday and notes it has grown on her farm for twenty years. Also, Mr Nodwell, Bradford public school principal, resigns to enter the drug business.
North Bay to Orangeville join in celebration as over one thousand Orangemen parade. Orange Young Britons take part with addresses and sports on the program, with Orangeville as next year’s host.
Barrie welcomed thousands for the annual Derry relief celebration on Aug 12 1690 with a monster parade of 650 Royal Black Knights 247 Orange Young Britons from North Bay to Toronto. The event featured 32 lodges 5000 at Agricultural Park and speeches by Dr Banting Mayor Little Major Hartt and Col Currie praising loyalty Protestantism and the Union Jack amid calls to oppose separatism and school tax disputes.
Constable Case fired a warning shot at two motor car thieves near Ardagh property on Dunlop Street but the pair escaped. The stolen Chevrolet touring car with Ontario plate 11-294 was later found inoperable in a garage after being abandoned with five gallons of gas. Additional thefts included fuel raids along the Toronto Hamilton Highway and a Clarkson refreshment booth break in. No suspects yet.
The hearing date of September 5 was set for Vickers Limited appeal against Magistrate Jeffs' conviction under the shop closing bylaw. The Renfrew holiday closing by law was quashed in Toronto by Mr Justice Mowat with costs awarded against the town.
A Simcoe County deputation pressed for a survey of the Nottawasaga River to reclaim 206 008 acres of flood prone land. Minister F C Biggs pledged provincial funding for survey work and up to 20 percent of dredging costs if feasible, with an engineer to inspect this summer.
Friday night featured crab races and canoe events with several spills. Winners included Walker Webb and W Liscumb in men singles. H Millard and W Webb with W Liscumb and J Newman in doubles. W Liscumb and J Little in tandem gunwale. H Millard and J Monkman in crab race.
