GLOUCESTER, Va. (AP) Gloucester County supervisors have given the Virginia Independence Bicentennial Commission one week to devise an equitable shuttle bus system between Gloucester Point and Yorktown for the celebration marking the 200th an niversary of the British surrender at Yorktown. The board, saying it’s ‘‘tired of being treated like a stepchild’ by the state in preparations for the celebration, voted unanimously Wednesday to take the strongest possible action to assure bus service for county residents if the com mission fails to act. That action could include stopping ser vice being provided by a 74-bus fleet at the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge that connects Gloucester Point and Yorktown — a move that the supervisors acknowledged would throw the Bicenten nial plans into chaos. “People will be storming the bridge,’ Supervisor W.E. Belvin said. The bus fleet has been contracted by the supervisors to shuttle visitors from 1¢ Satellite parking areas to celebration sites in Gloucester Point and Yorktown Commission officials are relying on the system to provide free shuttle service between the two areas to the estimated 100,000 visitors that are expected daily during the four-day fete that will begin Oct. 16. “Let's let these people know we're tired of being jerked around,” said Supervisor R. Bruce Long. “This whole fouled-up bus system is but another ex ample of the lack of guidance from the governor's office. Gloucester is being treated like a stepchild,” he said. County Administrator John J. Jackson said the commission expects the buses being operated by Gloucester to provide the backbone of a free shuttle service between Yorktown and Gloucester Point without any subsidy. Jackson complained that Gloucester has been slighted in the $800,000 being spent by the state on the Bicentennial celebration. As of Wednesday, only $34,000 of that amount has been spent in helping Gloucester prepare
