E P Farr, superintendent of construction All Negro elementary children in Aiken attended the school until 1954 when Pine-crest was built At the age of 45. with a distinguished history of graduates behind it. the school was closed this yearSchool officials said main tenance costs were too high to warrant continued use In addition a building inspection two years ago revealed a number of improvomehts would be required to prevent condemnation of the structure as a fire hazard The list of improvements required included four more fire excapes on the second floor, enclosure of an open stairwell, fire-proofing the boiler room and installing a new door there, and installing a new sprinkler systemIntegration was another factor in closing the school Former Aiken Graded students arenow attending Eustis Park.North Aiken.
