Vol. 94 No. 13Haidt resigns as Humboldt postmasterHumboldt Postmaster Virgil Heidt has announced his retirement from the postal department, effective July 1. He was named postmaster in July, 1978, •ucceeding E. D. “Dale” Johanson.Heidt was in the armed forces from 1944 to 1948, serving overseas part ofVirgil Heidtthat time. Following his discharge, he held various jobs in the Humboldt area and joined the postal .department in December, 1954. He has served in every capacity within the postal department since that time. When Heidt started working for the post office, it was located on Sumner Avenue, between what is now Saul's Studio and the west portion of Blakeatad's Rexall Drug Store. The current post office building was erected in 1957. Heidt and his wife Betty are the parents of a son, Roger, and a daughter, Marcia. There are three grandchildren.Heidt is well-known for his volunteer work with the ambulance crews in the area. He resigned the first of the year, due to his health, following 17 years of volunteer service. Also, Heidt has served as a councilman with the Humboldt City Council since 1980. His term on the council will expire Dec. 31,1983.Heidt indicated he will pursue various hobbies in his retirement «uid also attempt to “clear up 30 years of odd jobs my wife has requested be completed.0A permanent replacement for Heidt will not be known for some time. However, a postmaster-in-charge will be chosen from a roster by a Sioux City agent. A policy of the postal department outlines that a postmaster-in-charge will not be named permanent postmaster.
