Integration PollShows Split AmongWhite PopulationThe white population of the United States is completely split on the question of integration, a major national survey of Negro-white relations reveals. Of the Northern whites, only 32 percent want the races kept apart, while 74 percent of Southern whites want them kept separate. To put it the other way, 58 percent of Northern whites are for integration as compared with 17 percent of the Southern whites who favor this move.No matter where the Negro lives, how much education he has, no mutter what his age, income or religion, 90 percent wish the races brought together. Only six percent favor keeping them apart and only four percent have no opinion.The problem is not one of religion, because there is practically no difference in opinion between Catholics and Protestants. Percentages in this area are almost identical with those in the North-South findings. Education, however, makes a greatdifference in attitude. AmongNorthern whites with eight grades or less of schooling, 48 percent favor segregation. But only 16 percent of Northern whites with college educations favor keeping the races apart.
