SOTIIKARD Who On Tuesday Observed Golden Wedding Anniversary.F’ifty years of happily wedded life vere observed Tuesday by Mr. and Mrs. Edwy A. Sotheard of 390 Front street. They celebrated the anniversary at noon with a family dinner and in the ?vening were given a surprise by several of their friends who called to give them a party and spend an hour with song, make a presentation of money and other gifts. Ice cream and cake were served. The Sotheards kept op^nhouse during the day and received many callers and telephone messages and the mails supplied them with several post cards. Both arc in exceptionally good health, considering the fact that he is 74 years of age and she is 68 and the anniversiry was one of the delightful events of their lives.Edwy A. Sotheard was born in Winslow April 26. 1859, a son of Ariel and Melissa Sotheard. Mrs. Sotheard was born Cora Whitten in West Gardiner June 4, 1865, a daughter of Elbridge and Martha Whitten. Th°y were married May 16, 1883, in Gardiner by Rev. Leverett Bradley, an Episcopal rector, in the rectory. Since that time they have lived in Georgetown. Arrowsic, Salem. Mass.. Bath, then to Lisbon and some years ago returned to Bath. Mr. Sotheard is a carpenter and has led an exceptionally active life. They have three daughters, Mrs. Ibra K. Lawrence of Arrowsic. Mrs. Martha Hall and Miss Evelyn Sotheard, both at home; and one son, George W. Sotheard of Portland. There are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.Mr. Sotheard has three brothers, Frank E. Sotheard of Lewiston. Fred E. Sotheard of Salem, Mass., and Bert Sotheard of Richmond Corner; two sisters, Mrs. Lura Sprague of Whitman. Mass.. and Mrs, Nellie Williams of Lisbon; two half sisters, Mrs. Hannah Overlock of Lewiston and Mrs. Lydia Tot man of Bath, and a half brother. Elbridge Sotheard of Malden, Mass. Mrs. Sotheard has two sisters. Miss Ruth A. Whitten of Hallowell and Mrs. Lillian Clark of Augusta, apd two brothers, Edwin Whitten of South Boston and James Whitten of California.Both Mr. and Mrs Sotheard are members of the fir./w Baptist church in Bath.Among the day's callers several carried gifts and Mrs Soiheard was also presented with several floral bouquets and after the evening meal when they were in a reminiscent vein and thinking over the many things for which they had to be thankful after 50 years of married life, they were surprised by the appearance of their son. George W. Sotheard of Portland, but their astonishment didn't stop there for he was followed by a number of friends of the family who had also come to spend an evening with them.In the group with George Sotheard was his wife, and among those who spent the evening with the old folks'' were their daughter. Mrs Ibra K. L^w-rence of Arrowsic, Mr. Lawrence, their daughters. Irene and Ruth, and their sons Elmer and Robert Lawrence; another daughter. Mrs, Martha Hall and daughter Esther, and a third daughter. Miss Evelyn Sotheard; the pastor of the First Rap:ist church and his wife. Rev. and Mrs. Charles R Sims: the pastor of Beacon street church and his wufe. Rev. and Mrs, Weston P. Holman; Rev, and Mrs. Marshall Powers of Topsham. old' friends of the Sotheards; Miss Helen Foster, Mrs, James McNeil and daughter Nat/3 lie; Prank Sotheard of Lewiston, his son Alvah and Mrs, Alvah Sotheard and their daughter Hilda; Mrs. George Williams of Lisbon and daughter. Mrs. Frieda Brewer and Mrs.Maud Snell.After the visitors had been greeted and all had found places in the spacious parlor Rev, Marshall Pow'ers offered a prayer and then Mrs. Lawrence sang the familiar old song. Put On Your Old Gray Bonnet. Mrs. Weston P. Holman followed by singing On the Same Old Road. Games were played and during the social festh'ities that followed Mr. Holman made the presentations to Mr. and Mrs. Sotheard, There was an old fashioned hymn sing and the Sotheards' pastor, Mr. Sims, closed with a benediction. Then the refreshments were served.
