Schlines explained that this award is being presented to rural families with 100 years of farming operations in the family and special service associated with farming in the Columbus area.Donald and Evelyn Birkel and their seven children live and direct their partner farming operations from their home in Section 33, Savannah Township in Butler County. The children attend the St. Mary's school in David City, and Don serving on the Chureb-School Council. Don has also served on the Dist 11 School board for a period of 4Knights of Columbus and serving the organization asliecture In addition to the service Donald Birkel has given to his community, he also found time to serve his Country with duty in the Air Force from ,Dec 1956-60 It was during this period of service that Don developed his special interest in electricity.
