ServesBoys, Girlsn*iSmo* Its beginning five years ago the model youth program known as Kids, Incorporated, has served an-nually upwards of 3,000 boys and ,f girls in year-around athletic re- 11 creation program.The program was born during the recent war, as an effective means of c combatting after - school idleness a which often was a workshop for ft thoughts and acts of delinquency. s And proof of the program’s effectiveness is the fact that during the five years oftits existence only two youths par- V X*J{ ticipating in the V ^ 1TtCstbelt;S(0]ar:o:kRtlprogram have gone afoul of the law and ended up ! in court.Until this year the program was j financed solely by | voluntary contributions and fund- Praising activities tlt;put on by various Douglas Smyth civic clubs or by youngsters partici- P pating in the program, This year g the Amarillo Community Chest’s ap- 1 propriations committee earmarked ,V $3,000 per year for the purchase of tiequipment.Each summer an average number d of 112 softball teams with 15 boys « or girl? on the roster engage in a tlt; 21-game, two-games-a-week sched-|e ule. In the fall 24 football teams of 1 20 boys each participate in weekly a contests for which the after-school periods during the week are used f: for practice. And in the winter cl months an average of 60 basketball 0 teams with 10 boys on the rosters F utilize gymnasiums of the Maverick Club, Youth Center, St. Mary’s t: Academy and Price College in a t! ; two-games-a-week schedule.All adult supervision in the youth program—coaches, umpires and referees—is on a voluntary basis. The only paid employe, paid by the city’s recreation department, is League Co-ordinator Ralph Dyke-man.hIPr:Policies of the program are determined by a board of directors. J.Douglas Smyth is president, Mrs.John Merchant is secretary and Mrs. J. N. Childers is treasurer.Other directors include Ray Daniel, Dykeman, Dan Higgins, John Peterson, J. R. Brown, Ben Burkett, Bob Clements, Dr. R. R. Swindell, Lawrence Griffith, Kenneth Grenewald, Lee Nemechek, Mart Hudson, John Storseth, Father Anthony Rodriquez, L. A. Pitt, E. B. Hicks, Grady Truitt, Charles Hermon, Mrs. Iris Fox Graham, Albert Lard and Judge E. E. JordarvThe program is designed not only to provide after-school athletic recreation for boys and girls who are not members of school athletic teams, but also to teach the fundamentals of good sportsmanship, fair play, and the not-easily-acquired art of getting along with the boys and girls from other environments and other sections of the city.It lias won high praise for the accomplishment of these purpose.5 from such representatives of theschool department as E. Hunter Earle Fischer and Floyd Hemphill; from the city’s law enforcementagencies by way of Justice of the Peace Mrs. Ivy Wilkinson, County Juvenile Officer Jack Grant anc Judge Jordan; and from hundred.'of Amarillo merchants and businessmen who each year contribute cash and merchandise as prizes foi the youngsters participating in the program.
