Congregation at Walkersville to Celebrate T omorrow.SPECIAL SERVICES PLANNEDThe Lutheran church, of Walkers-ville will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary Sunday evening, July 16, with special services. Rev. it. S. Patterson, whp dedicated the church 30 years ago, now the pastor of the Lutheran church of Woodsboro, will preach che sermon.Following is a history of fee Walk-ersrille Lutheran church:The first Lutheran congregation in the state of Maryland was on the Mo^ nocacy in Frederick county, 10 miles norths of the city of Frederick, at a point where the route of travel fromPennsylvania crossed the Monocaey. This settlement was one of the results of the .expansion of population from the east westward.In the year 1710 as a result of the great increase, of German immigrants to America, many of whom settled inLancaster county, Pennsylvania, from-which .point there was a natural avenue of travel leading southward along -the1 rich limestone belt, crossing the •Susquehanna at Wright’s ferry (Wrightsvilie) on to York, Hanoyer, LitUestown, crossing the state line into Frederick county on to the Potomac into Virginia. Which route of travel figured prominently in the history of our country.The mother Lutberaa,church on the Monocacy was organized and built in 1734. However, the Lutherans who settled or later moved into the beautiful Glade valley, attracted by Its rich soil and better facilities of school and travel, were compelled to go either to Utica.'Woodsboro or Frederick to enjoy the ministries of a Lutheran church.Thus the Lutherans who lived In and about Walkersville in 1890, requested permission of the Maryland Synod to build a church at Walkers-Tilie. The request was granted. Thus Jn February, 1891, Adam Diehl, -Sr.. and Augustus Clem were appointed to solicit subscriptions for tbe new church. In a short time more than $2,009 were secured in cash and subscriptions. with the names of 31 persons fbr an organization.The, congregation was organized July 8. 1891, when the following offi-- «rs were elected and installed: Adam Diehl-' Sr.. and John Crutd. elders: T. S. Alba ugh and A. 8. Neff, deacons: Rev. Diehl, then pastor of Woodsboro, was elected pastor.A brick ehnrcb. costing $3,500, was built on Pennsylvania avenue, the cornerstone of which was laid In the Spring of 1S9I. and the church formally dedicated Jnly 17. 1892, with special and appropriate services.Rev. Mr. Patterson, upon becoming pastor of the Woodsboro charge, served a* pastor unt il july 1S93. when theWoodsboro charge refused to admit Walkersville info their already largecharge, whereupon 4he church was without a pastor for about four months. ~—November, 1893, Rev. Mr. Asper became pastor, when Walkersville was admitted into the Utica charge, consisting of Bethel, Creagerstown and Utica.August, 1903, tbe congregation received by bequest, as a gift from Mrs. Mary A. Dodrear her valuable property, to be used as a parsonage, into which Rev. Mr. Asper and hie family moved the following spring, and since It has been tbe parsonage of tbe church.Rev. Mr. Crist, who served the church from July 4, 1906, until his death in 1914, has left many kind memories.Rev. Shilke, the present pastor, was called to the church while student in the seminary at Getfysbhrg, and took charge of his active duties,upon graduation in May. 1915.Tbe Lutheran church now 30 years old. the youngest in the family of churches In Walkersville. has enjoyed a steady growth. It now numbers 155 communicants.POLICE FUND SWELLED BY FINES PUT ON BOOTLEGGERSMany Are Clught in Meshes of Lawfit Montgomery County-Two Pay $300 Each;Sheriff Alvie A. Judge Samuel Riggs, who presided in the police court, where all of these cases are tried. Is imposing heavy fines In most cases. As a result of these fines, th? police fund of the county Is rapidly assuming plethoric proportions, and those who feared that this fund would not be sufficient to pay the expenses of the. county's po!ice system, as contemplated by the law enacted by the last Legislature, have changed their minds., The latest to fall victims to the vigilance of these officers are Arthur Dove and Mollfe Wade, both colored. wh#se homes, near Betfaesda, wore visited on Tuesday by connty and Federal officers. At each place a still and some com liquor were found. Both pleaded -frailty in the police court at Rockville to haring intoxicating liquor in their possession with the intention of selling It. and each paid a fine of $309 and costs.A scientist of the Smithsonian Institution has perfected a cooker *o use the heat of the sun as fuel.
