Melissa Wallace, DVM, a postgraduate veterinary intern, says that all dogs are not created equal, especially when it comes to their ability to withstand winter weather.Formerly a racer and handler of sled dogs and currently a resident, postgraduate veterinary intern in medicine and surgery at New York City’s Animal Medical Center, Dr. Wallace is uniquely qualified to offer tips on caring for dogs in cold weather climates. She was raised in Staples, Minnesota, where she raced sled dogs during her high school year. (She received her B.S. degree in biology from the University of Minnesota in Duluth and her DVM degree in 1985 from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, where she graduated at the top of her class. She was one of only 12 veterinary school graduates chosen for a veterinary intern post at the Animal Medical Center.)
