Vernon T Wheeler of Acton is listed among 112 casualties and survivors after the HMCS Ottawa was destroyed by military action. Four officers and 108 ratings are missing believed killed. five officers and 65 ratings survived. one Halifax-born commander Lieut Commander Rutherford is dead. Wheeler served two years in the Royal Canadian Navy and prior to enlistment worked at Acton Machine Shops as chief mechanic and draftsman. Training Plane Forced Down Near Acton
A single motor Army training plane made a forced landing about a half mile south of Acton on the Marshall farm. The aircraft touched down in a soft field, one wheel broke off and the propeller bent. The pilot escaped injury.
