The Acton Agricultural Society reported 6500 attendees at the 48th Fall Fair over Friday and Saturday. Despite Friday’s show cancellation for an artificial ice plant project, large tents housed exhibits while a noon Saturday parade led by Acton Citizens’ Band and local scouts preceded the main events.
Council weighs financial shortfall as three members resign after lengthy discussion of park use by local authorities. By law amendments and appointment plans discussed to fill vacancies and extend terms for Parker Irwin Kilby retired and new appointees considered at the Acton Agricultural Society meeting.
Equipment for the Acton arena arrived from Toronto and was being hoisted into place by a crane. After installation, brine piping will be added to the ice plant to prepare for artificial ice operations this winter.
A special meeting of the board accepted recommendations for the Community Centre project. The committee approved heating, plumbing and ventilation proposals, a $5,000 Sheet Sheet Metal bid, and plans for building expansion and electrical work, with total costs and timelines outlined and a pending debenture of $1,000 for related funds.
Acton Area projects saw an appeal to the Conservation Authority dismissed after a hearing. The town opposed by Toronto Township and Natalper Township argued funds for parks and recreation were misallocated. Evidence showed pollution concerns and questioned the use of Black Creek water for consumption and swimming. The hearing considered Acton’s levy share and eventual proposed reductions to fit approved capital works.
A probable reception centre concept was discussed for Acton in case of a nuclear attack. Bruce McGregor, Emergency Measures Coordinator, outlined fallout plans and community roles while noting limited funding and coordination with local police and peace services.
Mi Hal Pronk of Presdepick St emerged as the winner at Saturday night school event. The winner was selected amid festive atmosphere as attendees enjoyed the session.
