Mr and Mrs Soulsby and daughter Mary nearly drowned when their car left the highway near the On tairio Reformatory and slid into an eight foot artificial pond. Soulsby, a guard at the Reformatory, escaped through a rear door and helped his wife and child to the bank as passing motorists rescued them. The family emerged soaked but uninjured.
