Youth Wrecks Stolen Car and Flees Town in Acton
A 1953 model stolen in St Jacobs crashed into a parked car and was driven into another vehicle on Main Street Acton. An 18 year old Kitchener youth fled after the collision while a 8 year old passenger from Kitchener was treated for a head wound. Police hunted for the missing driver as the stolen car was towed away in a complete wreck.

Children Believed Cause Of $5 000 Barn Fire
A barn and adjoining shed on the Stervitt property near Breezes Road were destroyed by fire last Friday noon. Fire Chief J. Newton estimated the loss at 5 000 dollars. Constable Bill Bennett and Chief Newton investigated a tip that local children bicycles away from the scene minutes before the firemen arrived and concluded the children were responsible. The buildings contained last year’s hay crop and had no animals. Fire crews faced blocked access and limited water, using an old well and an auxiliary pumper to fight the blaze for over two hours.

Constable Hurt in High Speed Chase of Guelph Prison Escapee
North Halton OPP Constable Dave Richardson sustained serious injuries in a chase near Acton while pursuing Gregory McLeod, one of 12 escapees from Guelph Reformatory. McLeod was captured near Rockwood on Highway 7 after Richardson forced the suspect to slow, colliding with a hydro pole. Richardson was treated at Guelph General Hospital and listed in serious condition.

Start More Periods Per Day For 312 High School Students
More periods per day will begin Tuesday at the high school to accommodate 312 students. The eight period day expands to nine for grades nine to twelve and ten for some students, with 14 upper school subjects offered and periods shortened from 40 to 38 minutes. Principal Garriet McKenzie leads the staff with several new teachers and room assignments across grades one through nine.
M Z Bennett School Prepares for 400 Pupils
A dozen teachers have been assigned classrooms at M Z Bennett public school and will greet students on Tuesday. Kindergarten students will be cared for by Miss Joan Park, a recent teacher college graduate. Grade one teachers are Mr Kay Alger in room two and Miss Sheila Bochme in room three. New staff include Miss J Bosley for grade two in room four, Miss F Small for grades two and three in room five, Mrs G Benton for grade three in room six, and Miss H Jackson for grade four in room seven.
