The Acton weekly newspaper speaks on price, ad rates, and publication details. Advertising rates listed per inch and per line with terms for contracts and no specific directions given. Editor and publisher W. Moowi works from a local address.
The piece urges readiness for a likely Ontario general election with Mee Edmund Bristol appointed to organize the National and Conservative Party. It notes Chatsworth News ceasing and merging with Owen Sound Sun-Times, then argues for focus on education and work as schools reopen, stressing pride in one’s occupation and respect for study.
A careful analysis of Acton’s estimated receipts and expenditures shows the 1921 tax rate rising by five mills from last year. Waterworks debt and interest total 13 mills, with $8,423.53 cited, while the School Board levy and county and general costs push overall requirements. The waterworks installation, demanded by ratepayers, is expected to grow revenues and allow a substantial rate reduction next year, with anticipated 1922 revenues easing the burden.
The village council considers perpetual care for Fairview Cemetery plots via a Permanent Board of Management. An amendment to the Cemetery Act enables creation of such a board by village councils and townships to adopt long term care plans, ensuring uniform beautification and ongoing upkeep, funded by plot receipts and bequests. The Markdale council recently approved a seven-member board after debate.
A fragmented passage describes Hydro-Radial remarks at an Oakville gathering. It notes opposition to promiscuous radials and cites Mr. Drury presenting arguments from a Commission report against provincial guaranteed lines from Toronto to Hamilton.
The Guelph Herald criticizes the Senate as a useless appendage to Canada’s administration and advocates bold reform. It suggests appointing a woman to a Dominion Senate vacancy to inject life and activity, reflecting broader agitation for change despite conservative stances.
Daylight saving observance shows greater variation this year across Canada and the United States, with predictions this may be its final year on the continent. In Britain farmers block any permanent system as a government timetable drops the bill amidst broad agricultural opposition. Mothers with large families and dairymen say they cannot milk on artificial hours.
A circular from John G. Kent of the Canadian National Exhibition urges employers in the bipe fair to model public politeness and civility. The message centers on National Progress as the 1921 theme and calls staff to be courteous, maintain public faith, and foster harmony among fellow members to improve patron experience.
Notes reflect on Sir Sam Hughes death and Liberal and Conservative positions in Canada. References to Ireland's ties to the Empire, Lloyd George Sinn Fein talks, and W A Clarke's renomination. Mentions Ontario License Board chair James Hales, Russian church leaders, court fee changes, and racing criticisms. Discusses Election Act amendments and Hydro Radial Report endorsements.
Vancouver sport life centers on yacht club activity and rowing near Burrard Inlet. At Drluhouse Park the Vancouver Polo Team competes as sailboats, motor launches, and catboats fill the water in a lively seaside program. Spectators enjoy yacht racing, a variety of boats, and the social scene around theHarborfront amid summer leisure on the coast of British Columbia.
Amid odd anecdotes from Patro Conkin, a pink water tub and tartaric lemonade spark a chaotic roadside tale. The narrator recalls supply shortages, ringers of lemonade, and a showman’s scramble to deliver a strawberry lemon drink amid a carnival crowd. The piece leans into humorous, rambling reminiscence with vivid characters and local color.
A garbled OCR passage details an undefined wire, a white presence, and a hot tomb. A contiguous parcel with a compound conanthig mingles with a road and a thin canting whirl. The text remains unclear about clear actions or outcomes.
A fragmented text blends cautionary aphorisms with a mocked town advertisement and a tale of a stubborn cow sale. It mixes ruminations on prudent steps, wary jumping, and the value of careful advertising for a good town, ending with a humorous exchange about a difficult cow and a hardman. The piece echoes old column voices with misspellings and dialect.
An old newspaper ad touts Dr Miles anti pain pills for headaches neuralgia rheumatism and ovarian pain. It promises speed relief with safety and lasting effect aimed at Acton in 12 January issue style.
