The town of Georgetown won approval for annexing over 1000 acres in Esquealng township with 2000 more acres included. The Municipal Board finalized compensation adjustments in lieu of taxes for the township and delivered the decision yesterday afternoon.
Warren Grove residents endured muddy streets during sewer work on Maron Boulevard which reached the 20 week milestone. The council ordered raising sewer levels and contractors plan to resume above ground work to restore normal street status.
Mothers and ladies of the church joined the Mission Band in the United Church basement for the Thankoffering meeting on Friday evening. Mrs Symonolica assisted by Mrs Bean led a full program with guest speaker Mrs A Lang telling stories to the group and a missionary box play by Gwen Bean and others. The meeting included scripture readings, prayers, singing, a giving of offerings, and a piano solo before closing benediction.
About twenty men and women are enrolled in a YMCA leaders corps training program held Fridays. The group studies gymnastic basics, basketball, volleyball and badminton with aims to run gym classes hobby groups and purpose groups in Acton after induction into the National Leaders Fellowship during YMCA week in January.
Completion of the latest addition to Actons business section is due this Friday when Doug Manning holds open house in his new appliance store at the corner of Mt and John Streets. The two storey brick structure houses Manning Electric on the street floor and a jewellery and gift shop operated by Don S Bexton on the first floor. A large apartment on the second storey will be occupied by Mr and Mrs Manning.
Milton and Acton high schools to receive two additions funded by the Department of Education with up to 40000 for Milton and 40000 for Acton. Immediate steps to secure municipal approval for debentures, and councils urged to act so work can start for the next September.
An elderly woman, Mrs Floresta Ttanaden, was struck by a bent truck wire at the Mill and Willow Street corner Friday near noon. She was taken to Dr Kenney's office and then to Guelph General Hospital for treatment. Driver identified as Tennant, age 3.
The November meeting of the Auxiliary Women Missionary Society met at Mrs. Josey day’s home with Mrs. Bod presiding. Devotions by M A J Buchanan and Mrs Jobe O Hara, a report from Miss Margaret Kennedy of the Id an Presbyterian Mission, and discussions on African field projects led by Mrs. Fret Andersen, Mrs Beart Rete vedy, and Mrs McKnight.
The next paper issue will be a thick Christmas special featuring detailed gift ads from local merchants. It will include decoration ideas, recipes, and directions for homemade gifts with suggested purchases to guide shoppers.
The Knox Presbyterian church hosted Rev. D. Gordon of Duff's church Paalineh as guest speaker at both services on Sunday November 21. The day featured missionary sermons, an evening auxilary thankoffering fireside, a Love of God worship, a violin performance, and thanks to Mr Gordon and participants. Refreshments followed a fellowship period.
Saturday dances for the teen-agers at the Y drew about 400 attendees. The events provide a master of economies and staff, with refreshments, and proceeds go to support basketball and volleyball teams.
The Actos conversion to 60 cycle power dominated last week’s Public Utilities Commission meeting. Mason, head of the hydro department, said crews synchronized with conversion demands though post changeover work remains. Minor low voltage issues and sporadic port outages will be addressed as checks proceed townwide.
A new games room was opened in the basement of Acton Legion hall on November 12 after members built it themselves. Six of eight charter members attended the social, with President M Storey presiding and a Hamilton magician entertainer providing a program. The room features a billiard table and table tennis equipment as about 140 guests enjoyed refreshments.
Minister Dunlop opened Acton’s new high school amid praise for staff and community gifts. Speakers stressed hard work, English and literature, democracy, and school expansion with a $190,000 building partition approved. Local officials and groups donated plaques, dictionaries, and furnishings as Rev Armstrong led the dedication.
Industrial Commissioner Whitaker addresses the Action Chamber of Commerce detailing the aims and methods of promoting industrial growth. He notes costs of progress and urges consideration of established firms' roles while outlining committee roles, upcoming meetings, and new member introductions.
Euchre and penny sale at Scout Hall on Saturday evening drew many prize winners. Ladies top prizes went to Mrs. R. L. Davidson and Mrs. George Fountain with consolations to Mrs. Carol Ellett. Mens winners included Fred Kentner and Mr. Harry Otterbein. numerous other prizes were awarded including household items and linens.
Halton Tuberculosis Association reports a stronger response to Christmas seals this season. President R F Bean noted on Wednesday that donations may still arrive by mail to the Bank of Nova Scotia.
Two basketball squads train regularly at the Y. The junior team for under 12 and the intermediate for under 21 aim to play in Galt soon. Notable juniors include Peter Teawson Don Lindsay and Frank Maniscak. Senior prospects are Wayne Arhe and Bul Skilling. They will compete in a league with Stratford Guelph and Galt starting January. The club hopes badminton tournaments can align with the away basketball games.
A week of nomination meetings is ahead in the district. In Actor a nomination meeting will be held in the town hall tomorrow night from 7:30 to 8:30 to fill mayor reeve deputy reeve and councilor posts plus four Public Utilities Commission members. The PUC will add two members next year to make a five person Commission. Nelson township holds its annual meeting tonight to nominate reeve deputy reeve councillors and three school board members. Naessagawera nominations are set for Monday afternoon. Esquesing electors will meet Monday evening in Esquesing Community Hall at Stewarttown to nominate candidates for reeve deputy reeve councillors and two school board seats.
Martin Marks, newly licensed pilot, attended the Acton air show film with Ernest Marks of Acton and George Chalmers of Guelph. Fred Wright, program chair, introduced the film at the Tuesday supper meeting. A nurse's room in the new high school received beds scales and an examination light.
