Hydro Commission inspected the Alice Street site and decided to pave the front area and install planter boxes. They also chose to move and cement the steel storage building for future use. Construction progress on the new hydro building remains favorable and on schedule despite debate over readings and costs.
Remembrance Day observances were held Thursday last week at M Z Bennett public school and Robert Little school, with programs led by students and ex service personnel. High school students gathered for a special ceremony conducted by Rev Dwight Engel as a bugle signaled the two minutes of silence.
Constable Bruce Kressler of the Acton O.P.P. Detachment is investigating the theft of about 215 in cash and a cheque from General Acceptance Corporation on Mill Street. The theft occurred after closing hours Thursday night of last week and was reported to police Friday.
Acton Lions Club led a two week pledge drive for the Eye Bank and handed over ecards after a turkey dinner gathering. The event recognized 145 eye donations and featured CNIB board chairmanship changes, guest speaker John A. McDonald, and notes on services, finances, and the eye bank’s progress nationwide.
The United Church Women sponsor Santa Fair in the old post office on the first Saturday of December with Santa Claus in person. Children can have pictures taken, plus films, fish pond, home baking, novelties, white elephants, and toy booths. Chamber of Commerce backs the event and adds gifts from retail members. A quilt auction will raise funds, and the town’s Christmas tree is hoped to be lit outside.
Halon County Council named Warden H Hinton and Reeve H Merry to represent the county on the Board of Governors of a proposed Peel or Halton County Community College. Two representatives were requested and will receive the regular twenty dollar per diem and expenses while serving.
Acton sought inclusion of part of the third line as a county connecting link road. The County Road Committee and County Council rejected the request stating the road connects two provincial highways not two county roads. Debates cited procedural delays and responsibility among Warden Hinton Reeve Lestie and Reeve H Merry.
Mrs Herb Schubert of 80 Churhill Road South won a new Peugeot station wagon in an EGA chain contest promoted as a shop at home program. She is a non driver and was surprised by the win after the six week giveaway, the first from Acton.
By Wednesday noon 119 Acton high school students had registered and paid deposits to spend a week at Expo ’67 with teachers. The committee expected final totals could reach 140 to 160. The Elmvale Plan would provide camping for thousands of students across Canada and the Acton group will travel by train, bring sleeping bags and cooking gear, cook their own meals, and spend each day at Expo with a projected cost around 50 dollars per student.
Acton Boy Scout Wolf Cub Apple Day set for Saturday November 26 aims to raise public support for the movement. The event, postponed from October to allow new local scout troop formation, will feature a door to door canvas in morning and afternoon with a special Apple Day committee drawn from the Acton Boy Scout Group Committee.
Nassagaweva Township council and school board members opened discussions on Thomas Plunkett's Halton Peel needs study. After a lengthy meeting they tasked clerk MclIntyre to draft recommendations for November 21, with focus on regional school boards and potential boundary alignments across Halton and Peel regions.
