First-hand account from Bearded Roy Downs of Milton who contributes writing to the Milton Champion Acton Free. The piece presents local observations and community notes from a resident with firsthand perspective.
Paving of the extended parking lot at the community center began Tuesday. The lot will extend over the race track end and cars will be barred from the park during a trial period this summer. A stone pedestrian trail from Park Ave to the arena door will be built. A flagpole is painted ready. Cement sidewalks from Bower Ave to the hydro building are under way.
Crowded by two other municipal meetings out of the council chamber, the parks and recreation board met last Thursday in the fire hall. With Recreation Director Howard Pearce resigning to take a Kingston post on June 2, the board discussed hiring an arena and parks manager or a combined role, approved advertising twice, and set an June 8 deadline for applications at a special Parks and Arena Board meeting.
Eighty Acton high school students leave June 14 for Expo and return June 21. Teacher Bill Coats sparked local interest in joining the Elmvale Plan, which coordinates Expo participation for hundreds of Canadian high school students. Teachers joining the trip are Mike Bevan Ian McGillivray Mrs Laszlo Miss Atkey and Mrs Walker.
The Y's Men raised nearly 400 dollars at their popular auction sale held in the community centre on Saturday afternoon. Attendance peaked at about 500 during the busy hours with auctioneer Jack Holmes aided by Roy Hindley. Hindley recalled the group’s start 17 or 18 years ago as all Y's Men members and volunteers from the Y's Mentes ettes and others helped.
The front page urges Acton residents and former townspeople to attend three community events starting with the official opening of the new centennial library, then the hydro building opening on Saturday, and Decoration Day observances on Sunday. Civic pride and reflection on the town’s development are emphasized.
Two Acton boys were bitten by animals at school grounds this week. Philip Timmings was bitten by a dog at Robert Little School. the dog was not caught. Michael Marchment, grade nine, was bitten by a groundhog he carried into Acton District High School. The groundhog died during testing for rabies while under observation.
Terry Waterhouse graduated in Business Administration from Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology at a convocation held at McMaster University, Hamilton, May 12. Present were his parents Mr. and Mrs. William Waterhouse and Miss Carol Swackhamer. He has been placed in the Special Development Course, Bank of Montreal, Oshawa.
Citizens invited to celebrate the official opening of Acton’s new Alice Street hydro building with George Gathercole and Ted Tyler Sr. among guests. Ceremony to feature a plaque unveiling by W A Roedde and remarks by MPs Harry Harman and George Kerr and local officials. Parade and band outside, library tour, and centennial project ceremonies follow.
Decoration Day is observed Sunday with an outdoor interdenominational service and geranium planting at graves. A large crowd of visitors and Actonians is expected to attend at St. Joseph's Fairview and Pioneer cemeteries where designated graves receive red geraniums. William Nicolak again serves as parade marshal as Acton Citizens Band and Guelph Pipe Band join the event.
Esquesing council cut the township mill rate from 9.13 to seven mills yet the overall levy rises due to school costs. Milton high school area gains a two mill reduction, while roads seek extra funding. Councils debated deferring road spending and awaited provincial approval for a $15,341.46 road budget increase to reach about $150,000.
