The narrative follows Mudge Clough aboard the Java Queen, detailing grueling dock work, cargo handling, and a tense crew dynamic as the ship nears home. Clough observes the grueling routine, the cargo’s danger, and the crew’s weary vigilance during a sweltering June voyage.
Mudge fails to sleep in a lower floor warehouse after a long haul of cotton bales and crates. He drifts through dim aisles, hearing whispers and shadows, and nearly sleeps on a dock before a dangerous distraction jolts him into a tense scramble for the exit and a perilous night.
A chaotic urban scene unfolds as Mudge Clough endures a brutal furnace of noise and danger. Amid crumbling walls, he toils to lift a heavy bucket, then collapses in exhaustion. A supervising man arrives with urgent orders to file a damage report, prompting Mudge to flee toward hope and the morning crowd.
A boy named Tommy asks about who plays in the band, recalling names like Mr Brown and Mr Treawn. The scene shows household talk turning toward music with a mix of confusion and curiosity as Tommy seeks clarification from his parents.
