At a May 12 meeting in the Legion hall the Acton committee organized Decoration Day for Sunday June 5. The plan calls for all plots in Fairview Cemetery to be decorated and attendees include the Acton Citizens Band, Guelph Pipe Band, and Guelph Cadet Band.
Two new subdivisions proposed by Acton citizens were reviewed at a Planning Board meeting. E Braida presented a subdivision on Mr Hraida property west of Glenlea. questions on rezoning delayed approval. A second plan covered the Beardmore property with street alignment to meet municipal requirements. Lakeview and Grenica plans noted as registered. further inquiry planned on pending developments.
AW O Neill chairman of the Kitchener Separate School board spoke to over 50 men at the Holy Name Society Communion breakfast at St Josephs church. He urged readers to be leaven for good and to subscribe to the Catholic press for perspective. He called for unity and urged knowledge of religion and open discussion.
Acton youth camps under way as applications for a day camp rise. A full program is planned with outdoor summer activities set on the Y M C A yard including badminton deck tennis volleyball and horse shoes.
Under bright sun at Acton park high school students from Erin Acton Georgetown and Milton competed for district track honors. Erin won with 164 points followed by Acton 134 Georgetown 121 and Milton 72.
Andrew Buchanan, missing from his Acton home for three days, was found in a bush shack on W. S. Enright’s farm three miles south of Acton. Police said a wide area search by a party of men had earlier combed Bush areas around Churchill, Speny side and Stewarttown with no success.
A 1940 Plymouth total wreck after veering into a ditch along Speyside sideroad at about 8.30 on May 14. Driver Irvin Legue of R R 2 Acton suffered cracked ribs chest injuries and a left knee injury. He was taken to Guelph General Hospital and discharged the same evening.
Representatives of Sunday schools and Y's Men from several congregations organized a church athletic league at the Y M C A. The first activity will be softball for church youngsters with entries expected from Anglican Baptist Presbyterian Catholic and Dutch Reformed churches led by Charles Leatherland the boys work chairman of the Y's Men.
Acton hosted the Five Counties Association second amateur painting exhibit with nearly 300 original works displayed in the public school auditorium. Artists from Halton Peel Dufferin Wellington and Waterloo participated, with 600 invited and two works per artist.
Acton Council held a long session addressing Lakeview subdivision road grades and work levels as Fraleigh Construction Co begins Wednesday. With Engineer Simmons' term ending, R. V. Anderson Associates was hired to manage Lakeview, while Milton may provide an on call engineer 30 50 basis. Plans for Warren Grove clean up and Marin Street bridge estimates were discussed along with street closures and a proposed by law limiting new gas stations being contested. Farmers and residents urged drainage fixes and Willow Street paving as budgets and public works options were reviewed.
A colorful Pirate Night replaced regular cub meetings with 50 plus cubs from A and B packs in buccaneer outfits. The program began with a treasure hunt and rewards of fake gold. later pirates walked the plank into a tub of water. Bagherra conducted the closing game. Akela
Norman Scott Marshall, longtime Eden Mills postmaster and storekeeper, will mark 30 years of service on May 19. Born in Nassagaweya, he is praised as a friendly, dedicated public servant who keeps his troubles private. His father, John Marshall, once recorded Norman’s birth as Nassagaweya’s first compulsory birth record.
Rev. and Mrs. William Graham of Powell River British Columbia named Good Citizens of 1954. The couple, first man and wife honored, were celebrated at a banquet. Rev. Graham serves St John’s United Church in Powell River and marks 40 years in ministry this year.
Wilson Allenby added another trophy to his collection by winning the two and a half mile National Steel Car race at Hamilton last Saturday. Forty started, 36 finished, with Acton’s younger man placing 14th and receiving an engraved cup on a stand to keep. He and Ed McHugh plan to race again on the holiday next Monday at Waterdown.
Eight applications greet the Royal Star Gra-Y club leading to formation of a new chapter. Secretary Bob Brayshaw notes the first meeting will be held next week under the original club’s supervision. Royal Star members plan a Niagara Falls trip while Carmen Woodburn presents Ottawa farm photos.
Sheila Paul continues to win in festivals across the province. On May 10 at the Warton Festival she won first in open violin with high marks and placed third in the 19 and under class. At Stratford the next day she earned second with 80 marks in the 17 and under violin class. She plans no more contests until the Canadian National Exhibition.
Final counts show 33,429 eligible voters in Halton, a 28 percent increase from 1951. Nominations set for May 26 with 108 polling places posted. advance polls planned in Milton Oakville Burlington for those away from their district.
The C.G.L.T. of Knox Church met Monday May 16 in the Sunday School. After a game and hymn they decided not to hold a meeting next week and were invited to a rally in Galt later in May. They painted salt and flour huts as their project and closed with taps.
Miss Sybil Bennett Halton MP escaped injury after a car accident on Friday near the Peel Halton town line. Driving from Georgetown to a Progressive Conservative nomination meeting in Milton the steering failed, the car veered into a ditch, she climbed a fence crossed a field to a farm house and was driven to the meeting with slight delay.
District highways official says No 7 highway from Rockwood to Brampton will be macadam patched extensively this spring and summer. The program calls for millions of tons of new material to smooth rough and heaved areas as Beamish Construction Co handles the work.
Tom Perkins of Acton escaped injury when his 1951 Ford skidded in gravel east of Limehouse and flipped onto its roof. The vehicle was damaged in the crash, with costs estimated at 500 dollars.
George Segesmondo escaped injury when his 1947 Chevrolet skidded in gravel near Acton. He applied brakes to turn into a lane. brakes grabbed, sending the car into a ditch and rolling onto its right side. Damaged vehicle valued at about $300.
