Acton PUC Accepts Tender for Hydro Department Truck

Acton Public Utilities Commission at a special meeting on May 1 accepted Franklin Prouse Motors tender of 2 264.00 for a new hydro department truck chassis after reviewing five bids. At the regular meeting on May 9 the commission discussed acquiring town property near the hydro buildings on Alice Street and approved sewer and water work contracts and write-offs of outstanding accounts. The Ontario Water Resources Commission analysis on the Acton sewage disposal plant noted high suspended solids, while expenses for the recent Waterworks Convention were approved, and monthly payments to various vendors and public utilities listed.

Governor General Massey to visit Acton and Georgetown

The Governor General of Canada Vincent Massey will travel through Acton this afternoon at 4.08 pm with a special team en route to Georgetown. She is to lay a wreath at the cenotaph in Georgetown after a brief address.

School Demolition Starts at Robert Little School

Armishaw and Armishaw Demolition Contractors of Guelph began tearing down the interior walls of the old Robert Little School on Wednesday. Reg Armishaw said work should progress rapidly with cranes moving in to demolish the roof and exterior walls, as A Battaglia Company of Guelph handles the new 12 room addition as the demolition sub.

Increase in School Debenture Issuance to 170000

Council voted to issue debentures totaling 170000 for an addition to Robert Little public school, up from 150000. The board cited higher tender costs and missing architect fees, while noting a 4000 gap above estimates. Local unemployment and a gas heating plan were discussed, along with cenotaph maintenance funded by the Legion and United Church.

Child Two Killed by Car At Ashgrove On Wednesday

A 21 month old named Steven Lee, son of Mr and Mrs Forest Leland Lee, was killed when he stepped from the road shoulder into the path of a car driven by Magistrate K M Langdon on Esquesing seventh line near Ashgrove just before noon Wednesday. Dr V Williams of Georgetown attended the scene and Coroner Dr G Syer was summoned. witnesses said the driver had no chance to avoid the child. The incident follows a 1957 head-on crash involving the same child and his father’s car near Stewarttown.

Acton Tennis Courts Ready For Weekend Play

Tennis players have gathered at Acton courts for early practice as the 1959 executive reports the hard court will be in excellent shape for play this weekend. The new executive will be announced next week in the Free Press, with a schedule likely then.

Battaglia Co awarded $154,026 school contract

The Robert Little school project in Guelph awarded to Battaglia Construction of Guelph after bidding ten tenders. The revised total cost equals $169,009 including furnishings and architect fees, with savings on aluminum doors cited by architect A Barnes. Construction to start immediately pending pages with the Department Seation and Ontario Main Board.

Seventy-Year Black Preceptory Member Attends Convention

C. K. Browne, 70 years in the Orange Lodge, attended the Royal Black Preceptory convention in Hamilton with Mrs Browne. He met many friends at the Royal Connaught hotel during the two day session. Browne is a past Grand Master of Olive Branch 877 and the present Grand Master of the Lodge. Mrs Street accompanied the Brownes, and Mr Street was elected first committeeman of the Grand Lodge.

Acton Principals Urge Prompt Kindergarten Registrations

Australian TV Executive Kemp Visits Acton on Canada Tour

Melbourne broadcasting chief and Amodtae Broadcasting Services Limited managing director Sydney Albert Kemp arrives in Acton to visit relatives and tour small town radio and television operations in Canada. He plans trips to Wingham Ontario and major US cities, aiming to expand TV service in Victoria as backers support his Australian company. Kemp, born in England, left Australia May 3, noting summer weather and favorable Canadian impressions. He will travel to New York Washington Tennessee and other centers before May 20 return.
