Council members pushed toward finalizing the 1966 budget while approving Lakeview subdivision street lighting. Tyler, Jeffrey and Tidley Avenues plus Elmore Drive to Lakeview Road will gain overhead distribution and underground services to steel standards, with full underground lighting deemed too costly.
At the Acton Rotary annual meeting William Pendleton was named president for 1966 67, taking office July 1. Other officers include Dick Lee as vice president, Jim McCulloch secretary, Ralph Davies treasurer, directors Gary Dawkins Lou Pocius Ron Lewis Tom Shields, with Mac Sprowl as past president. Plans were set for the annual horse show at Styles Acres Ranch May 21 22 in cooperation with Acton Rotary, featuring a pony prize. Ranch owner Bruno Sclisizzi is arranging details.
Contest winners Vicki Holmes grade seven and Allan Thompson grade eight received honorable mention and $3 each in the Halton County Tuberculosis and Health Association poster contest. Both attend M. Z Bennett School, which was also represented by other entries.
A Softball Association delegation won approval from the Parks Board to renovate both diamonds at Glenlea Park Prospects for a backstop and a water cooler near the gates were approved. Plans include possible after 8 pm washroom access supervision and future washroom construction. The park area will receive topsoil and a facelift with playground development and bandstand repairs. A chain link fence will separate the arena rear from Pioneer Cemetery.
After three days and 26 briefs, Thomas Plunkett concluded his public inquiry into Peel and Halton local government in Halton County. Submissions were received last week in Peel County including a brief from the Town of Acton and a private brief by H. H. Hinton, Reeve of Acton.
Township of Nassagaweya Reeve W. Coulter urges keeping elementary education and planning at the local level with some equalizing of high school funding township wide. He calls for more county responsibility by boards and commissions, notes conservation land assessment freezes, and says local officials can provide responsive governance amid modest debentures.
Acton Hydro Commission at its meeting last week accepted the tender of Masson Motors for a G M C van at a net cost of 2290 50 after a 671 trade in for the meter reader’s nine year old Volkswagen. Other bids were Thompson Motors 2518 53 and Andrew Murray Motors 2365 40. Delivery in three to five weeks. Also noted was a $2364 76 credit for overpayment of power in 1965 and a report on Ontario Hydro promotions and meter installations to improve power factor.
Erin Township will stay dry after residents rejected expanding licensed dining and cocktail lounges. About 52 percent of 1800 eligible voters cast ballots. advance polls showed mixed support with 30 yes for dining lounges and 37 yes for cocktail lounges in advance.
The Chamber of Commerce announces a home improvement contest with allied merchants advertising in sections B2 and B3. The April meeting will honor the Citizen of the Year with the winner announced before the dinner. Citizens may suggest candidates to civic committee chair Orval Chapman as Chamber Week runs April 17 to 23.
Halton County Council approved a 1966 budget raising the levy to 5.95 mills from 5.75 mills, generating $148,025 for increased expenses across departments. Roads receive $479,421 of the total levy, with general expenses at $1,245,221, after cuts to several departments and a large share from municipalities.
Firefighters answered a Sunday call on No 25 Highway to Beardmore and Co Ltd property formerly Marshall farm. Flames clawed a back shed as smoke filled the house before water from a booster tank and a smoke ejector saved the residence of Charlie Richards and his family. An ash pan dumped outside is blamed for sparking the blaze.
Marvin Burgess, a native of Hampton New Brunswick, is promoted to a new accountant at the Bank of Nova Scotia. He began Tuesday and comes to the job from Windsor.
Georgetown Deputy Reeve J L Young called the Ontario Municipal Association study tour to the United Kingdom a flagrant waste of money after opposing a plan to send three representatives. He was absent from the county council meeting where the motion to send War den Hinton Acton Deputy Reeve Frank Rogers Burlington and Clerk Administrator Garfield Brown as delegates was approved.
The motion to fund a tour named three men with $250 for expenses and $750 cash. Mr. Young urged county representation by the County Planning Association for better cost efficiency. The decision passed 20 to 9, with RR Parker, Young, Alan Day, and George Leslie voting no. Hoey and Hunter were absent.
Nassapaweva Township ratepayers pressed for relief at a four hour council meeting. A committee will draft points to be presented at the next regular meeting and sent to quarry operators. Quarries owners and reps promised to meet, review the concerns, and report back. Victims described window damage, panelling displacement, and unsellable homes due to blasting. One resident recalled a blast tossing a milk stool off the bench.
Acton directors and associates met March 2 to begin plans for the 1960 fall fair. President Jack Marshall and VP Wilmer Freer reported on the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies Convention in Toronto. Acton Fair earned class C fair recognition with rising attendance and notable exhibits, while Renfrew led class B. Committees were named, prizes to be revised for September 16 and 17, and a King Shows contract secured for rides. Fourteen 4 H clubs to sponsor a Calf Club and a Grain Club with leaders Nino Brazda and Russell Murray inviting members.
Y's Men's officers were inducted by District Governor Doug Copeland at the annual meeting. Melles was named president with G. W. McKenzie as vice president and Bill Mainprize secretary, Rick Coe treasurer, and directors Bill Wilson and Norno Turner. New members Milt Ball and Clive Bell joined. guests Barry Kirkness and Brian Otterbein attended. They toured the Ontario Steel Plant in Milton and planned events including a dinner at Pan Politac Club in Kitchener, a Civic Night on April 14, and district conference prep in Brantford.
Former fire chief Jack Newton visited Acton Firefighters and presented a new Canadian flag for the meeting room. He attended Monday evening practice to deliver a talk on hose evolution during a regular session at the fire hall.
Hespeler Mic Macs beat Acton Tanners 4 to 3 in the opening game of the best of seven Int B group finals in Hespeler. Acton dominated early shots but Watson turned away many, allowing four penalties and a first period Mic Macs goal by O Krafka.
