The Public Utilities Commission announced a division of town utility responsibilities into two separate departments effective Monday. J Lambert will supervise waterworks and the sewage disposal plant while the move aims to iron out issues noted earlier.
Stan Hall MPP spoke at Acton Chamber of Commerce dinner praising local service by the Chamber and Halton growth. The town eyed three new signs, a parks commission progress, fish derby plans, and a civic fund funded by merchants, with messages of thanks to Mac Sprowl for a province winning junior farmers team.
Acton Home and School members met for the March event with lawyer George Elliott discussing parental responsibility in guiding youth to life adulthood. Miss E Goodwin demonstrated classroom music lessons with Miss Anderson's class and a play ticket plan was updated.
The Acton branch of the Canadian Legion marks its 25th anniversary with a new wing at Main Street. Friday features a dance and the anniversary ball. Saturday hosts a membership banquet honoring charter members with Major John Anderson as speaker. Sunday open house and dedication ceremony officiated by Rev. E Jones.
Acton violinist Sheila Paul adds two firsts at Stratford Kiwanis Music Festival in the 17 and under and 19 and under groups. She also wins the Perth County Music Teachers Federation violin trophy and the W Struchey scholarship of 25 dollars.
The town lowers its mill rate to 61, a nine mill drop from last year, reducing about 12 per hundred in taxes for 1956. With expenditures rising to $291,445.28, revenue up to $72,702.62, and net tax needed $218,742.66, Acton approves the new rate amid other measures.
Fire at the William Laing home on Churchill Road forced the large family from their house while Acton firefighters saved the structure. Inside were Mr and Mrs Laing and four of their nine children. a tenth child was born recently at Acton Nursing Home. The blaze caused extensive smoke and water damage, with insurance noted and repair planned. Earlier on March 18 1954 another Laing residence in Esquesing burned completely, leaving only a baby buggy saved. Firefighters drew water from an Acton pumper and a nearby farm pond.
A congregational meeting approved buying the Patrick property at Mill and Elgin Streets to build a future church. The present United church will be repaved and renovated for use as a Sunday school building while repairs to the foundation and brickwork proceed.
Six members of the Acton family were in a late Sunday crash on the Queen Elizabeth Way. All were examined at Oakville hospital. two sustained minor injuries. Mrs Arbie suffered arm injuries and facial cuts from the windshield. Danny Arbie and Teresa Arbie among those treated. The Oakville couple in the other vehicle had slight injuries. provincial police investigated.
Rotarians and Y's Men held a joint meeting Tuesday evening. Members heard representatives of the on. expect signatures from members for a petition prior to the municipal vote on the Commission set up.
The North Halton Urban Board, meeting in Milton, passed a resolution to fund dog control across Acton Georgetown and Milton. Mayor J Armstrong and Reeve S Childs backed the plan to support the Oakville District Humane Society with 3000 dollars annually, divided among the three towns. The program provides inspections two half days weekly plus emergencies.
Acton bantams defeated Kitchener 22 19 on their ground while the juvenile team lost 78 32 to Garty. Dave Fleming led bantams with Price Shannon and Wilson scoring. Juvenile scorers included Jany Barrager Cooper Thorarinson Currier.
The Acton clinic led by Dr. Le Dalés and Toronto officers vaccinated about 600 dogs and cats yesterday. Clinics also operated in Brookville Campbellville Georgetown Rockwood with veterinarians guiding the efforts. Officials say rabies control progress continues and no new local outbreak has been reported since Eden Mills case.
