Acton meets Port Dalhousie in 0.HLA playdowns with a 3-2 comeback victory after a rugged first round. Woods stood out in goal and the Tanners rallied despite long penalties as the Port Dalhousie squad pressured early and throughout the middle periods.
Neil McDonald famed old time fiddler and Canada champion died in Guelph General Hospital in his 60th year after leading a Daughters of Scotland dance orchestra. Born in Brampton Township to John McDonald and Margaret McFadden, he farmed in Eramosa and Mimosa before moving to Guelph to live with his son. He won Ontario championship in Dundas and Canada title at Toronto’s National Exhibition last year. Survived by three children and one granddaughter, six sisters, and previously by his wife Marion Scott.
Knox Presbyterian W M S met on March 11 at Mrs Dr Buchanan's home. Mrs Blow opened with scripture and prayer. Reports were read and adopted. The group discussed Easter bank offering and invited WMLS YW S groups and churches to attend. Guest speaker Miss M E Anderson missionary from Georgetown British Guiana plans to return home. A reading on Our work in Canada and neighbor themes was shared. A luncheon followed.
At the March 11 meeting in Some School Acton Junior Farmers hosted Kerwin McPhail as chair with Calvin McIntyre guiding the program. Readings by Mrs Early contest Q A led by Doreen Ferguson a skit Entertaining Sisters Beau an ice cream eating contest won by Barbara Turner and Leslie Swackhammer readings by Elenda Britton a sing song with Donalda Switzer assisting. Lunch followed and the evening ended with dancing.
G W W Brown renewed his Free Press subscription for the seventy third time recalling the grease smeared first issue from 75 years ago. He and a schoolmate from Acton are the remaining locals, and Brown remains active in the Storey Glove Co shipping department sharing his long memory of the paper.
Floods spread across the county with many roads submerged on Monday. Highway No 25 showed ample drainage and strong culverts to handle rising waters though the Base Line north of Milton saw a flooded segment. Officials say the area avoided serious damage despite widespread high water and wet basements.
The Knox Y W A held its March meeting on Wednesday March 10 at Mrs C Leishman s home. The session opened with worship led by President Mrs Anderson followed by a prayer and scripture reading. Four members presented the study talk while Mrs Bowen and L Mann sang a duet and L Mann read from the Glad Tidings. A dainty lunch was served by the hostess and committee after the meeting.
The Halton Seed Fair and Bacon Show at the Town Hall drew the largest crowd on record. Winners included Norval’s Floyd Brigden for barley and Fred Nurse for top barley and oats exhibits. Judge Prof J C Steckley urged crop rotation and proper fertilizer for better yields.
A Monday evening accident on the corner of MA and Frederick Streets left AJ M McPherson of Arthur Street with cuts bruises to the head and a badly bruised left leg. He was dazed and shocked and taken home before a doctor arrived. The car, reportedly driven by I Rogers of Georgetown, may have contributed to slippery pavements and flooding.
Maimie Mainprize, visiting Acton with her parents, was feted at Alexandra Palace Toronto by friends and York Township Board of Education staff. Principal N A McDonald and others praised her long service to local students and wished her well in retirement.
Marco Club of the United Church met March 10 in the Sunday School room with Garnet and Mary McKenzie in charge. Ann Mowat led a devotional on communism and its relation to Christianity. Dick Bean led a discussion on Canadian communist organizations. Fred Coles shared an engaging account of his recent trip to England.
North Halton High School District Board met in Acton with all members present and Chairman C. Martin presiding. It approved increases for the Milton building project and equipment, plus removal of a co-insurance clause. Talks covered new courses, a visit to the Department and a conference with Georgetown High School Board.
The ceremony officiated by Mr. W Charlton united Nancy Robinson and Albert Edgar Alton at the Chariton home in Erin. Attendants included Mrs. R Patten of Guelph and groomsman Mr. Kite Head. A wedding supper followed at the groom’s parents’ Everton home before a short Toronto trip and residence on the Boy Scout Farm in Everton.
On March 17 Pat McCristall drove down Mill Street and collided with a parked car in front of the United Church. He crashed into Dr Douglas Garret’s vehicle, causing fender and headlight damage but no serious injuries. Chief Harrop detained him briefly and a police court sequel is expected Friday.
March events include Hard Time dance at Acton Town Hall with Eliot's Orchestra and Easter Dance with Kidd Bakers' Radio Cowboy Show. Admission 50c adults 25c children. Also Junior Farmers euchre and dance at Lorne School with lunch and prizes. A comedy play While the Sun Shines by Apprentice Productions debuts April 16 at 8:15 pm under Y's Men’s Club.
