PUC Defers Bookkeeper Applications and Approves Salary Increases

At the Acton Public Utilities Commission meeting on March 5, the board deferred male bookkeeper applications with layoffs at Matton to a later date. The commission approved a $100 salary increase for water superintendent J. Lambert and sewer superintendent A. Duby retroactive to January. Increases for Mrs. Urquhart, Mrs. Wallis, and J. McGeachle were approved, with insurance remarks and minor adjustments to hydro building and equipment coverage. The OWRC noted sewer water quality concerns at Beardmore and planned a special meeting with Beardmore officials and the town council.

Acton Couple Celebrates 60th Wedding Anniversary

Mrs and Mr Alex McGregor of Jon Street Acton celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Married in Guelph they spent most of life in Acton and vicinity with ten daughters one granddaughter one sister and a wide circle of relatives. Family notes scarce great grandchildren present and a Sunday family dinner followed.

Acton Chamber Hosts Guest Speaker From Insurance Federation

The Acton Chamber of Commerce hosted its second general meeting of the year at Knox Presbyterian Church with 23 members present. Guest speaker Row Harris of the All Canada Insurance Federation discussed automobile claims, noting the federation's $23 million payout last year and that automobile losses now top fire losses. He warned of rising accidents, saying accidents per 1,000 vehicles have doubled since 1889, with 107 accidents per 1000 vehicles per year at a peak, and that 90 percent of accidents stem from human error rather than mechanical failure. the talk continued on page six.

Former Acton Man Injured In Head-on Collision

Edward Mummagel 43 of Alliston, a former Acton resident and Baxter Laboratories foreman, lies in St Michaels Hospital Toronto with serious injuries after a two car head on crash south of Tottenham on Saturday. Hufnagel and Baxters from Weston were involved. hospital reports say his condition improved and the others are satisfactory. Police say both cars were completely wrecked.

Service Station Robbed Friday Of Cash, Goods

Ahieves broke a rear window to gain limited entry at a service station owned by Alec Wilson of Acton. Tools, tobaccos, a battery booster and a small cash amount were stolen Friday night, two miles east of Acton on highway 7. The incident, discovered Saturday morning, prompted North Halton OPP to investigate. Wilson had left town for a Mexico visit, his father ran the station.

Highway contract awarded for four miles of No 1 to Peel Construction

Deputy Highways Minister Fatten announced that Peel Construction Co. of Aram is let the contract to grade culvert reinforce concrete and asphalt paving for four miles of No 1 Highway from No 25 Highway at a cost of 1,188,353 dollars.

Council Approves 12 Room School Addition Plan

The council approved a 12 room addition to Robert Lite Public School with revised cost at 180000, down from 200400, to include two auxiliary rooms and heating system changes. Board chairman E W Bradley, trustees J W Wolfe and T Watson cited urgency for the 1959 80 term and noted government grants may offset heating costs while addressing safety concerns about the old section.

Architects Get Board's OK for School Addition

Robert Lattle Public School plans a $250000 addition with final approval aimed by March end.
