A county gathering at Stewarttown Hall heard Grove Jone Rarester and J E Whitelock agricultural representatives discuss deforestation safety and seed quality. About 128 attended as Esques ing Federation of Agriculture sponsored the event. Whitelock addressed the crowd. a wallet gift was given to Mac Sprowl by directors, the wallet crafted by Mrs J L Berly. Sprowl plans to leave for the British Isles on a scholarship.

Machine Speeds Up Town Tax Billing Process
The town buys a $4,000 Burroughs billing machine to speed tax hydro waterworks and daily accounting. Town clerk J McGrechip says tax bills usually take about two weeks to prepare and will be ready roughly days after the machine starts. A separate fire in Georgetown brigade Michie area caused $8,000 to $9,000 loss, with most clothing lost and few items saved.

Acton 1954 Budget Sets 59 Mills Tax Rate
The Acton council tabled the 1954 budget and approved a by-law setting the current mill rate at 59 to raise 147 073 25 dollars. Store Hours Change Proposal Voted Favorable Attitude
Acton merchants favor Friday night opening but 75 percent approval from all classifications is needed to rescind the current by law. A poll of 31 merchants found 24 favoring Friday night hours, 8 opposed, 1 noncommittal. Confectionery shops barber shops and garages were excluded from the poll. A committee including S Eisen and J Ledger was formed to push the proposal after Monday’s association meeting.

Acton Congregations Unite in Prayer for World Day
Acton women from four Protestant congregations gathered at the United church for World Day of Prayer services held in more than 100 countries last Friday March 5. Miss M Z Bennett led the program with prayers by Anglican Presbyterian Baptist and United church representatives. The service supported by Dr Sarah Chakko of India and raised funds for Christian literature worldwide.

Local Young People Compete in Festival Show
Ten members of the Acton Baptist Young People's Society traveled to Preston last Friday evening to participate in the Guelph Association Baptist Musical Festival. Contestants from Hilsburgh Cheltenham Guelph Stratford Kitchener Georgetown and Acton competed in multiple classes. Acton winners included Faye Garner first in soprano solo Mary Reid second in contralto solo Garner and Reid first in duet R Costerus second in tenor solo and Helen Landsborough fourth in piano solo.

St Albans Guild Plans Dads and Lads Night
A regular St Albans Guild meeting followed Ash Wednesday service with 31 members present. President Mrs C Cook chaired as reports were read by secretary Mrs W Coon and treasurer Mrs G Candler.
