Acton District Forms Home Guard Unit

The Acton and district Home Guard unit began last Tuesday evening with a strong turnout of veterans for the first drill in the Park. The Acton Legion supports the effort with Municipal Council approval. Regular Tuesday instruction will occur in the Park, inviting all to participate and serve on the home front.

Acton Juveniles Beat Milton 8-6 in Halton Loop Opener

Acton Juverites open Yene Halton baseball league with an 8 6 win over Milton on Friday night. Sparse crowd watched smart play as Acton rallied to tie in the second inning and pull away after the next. Milton scored a run in its first turn and added another later but could not hold the lead.

Acton Utilities Board Considers Mill Street Poles Removal

The Acton Public Utilities Commission held a meeting with Commissioner Symon and Chairman Hansen to discuss removing poles on Mill Street. They planned a joint session with Bell Telephone Co to review construction plans and debated tax collection arrangements with Acton Council.

Indoor Strawberry Festival Brings Narcissy Night Joy

An Indoor Strawberry Festival was held by Knox Young Women's Auxiliary on Tuesday evening in the Sunday School room. The event, moved indoors due to stormy weather, featured strawberry sportcake, a food program, and musical performances by Miss Flora Sayers, Mr. Marco, Mr. Tips Gibbons, and a male quartet.Mrs Wm Hall assisted with entertainments, and a pick-up bag contest added variety.

63 Blankets Sent Through Red Cross With Other Items

Acton Branch shipped four cartons of finished materials to Red Cross Headquarters over two weeks. The items include 78 sheets 72 pneumonia jackets 48 gauze handkerchiefs 24 triangular bandages 132 face masks 12 pairs pyjamas 12 lee bag covers 12 surgical gowns 12 surgical caps and 26 new and used blankets. In total 63 blankets were sent plus $42.27 to the Blanket Fund.

Lorne School Reunion Goes On Monday Rain or Shine

Old boys and girls of Lorne School will gather Monday next Dominion Day at 1 pm for games, visiting, and a dance to close the day. If weather fails, event moves to Acton Arena. An historical sketch of the school history from 1842, prepared by Mr Johan W. Pell, is available in limited copies.

United Sunday School Picnic at Edgewood Park

Scholars and friends of the United Church Sunday School enjoyed the annual picnic at Edgewood Park Eden Mills yesterday. Prizes were awarded across many events for children and adults including races croquet relay and horse and rider contests with a four hour, lively program and ample picnic lunch.

Area extended and re conditioned telephone lines around Acton

The Bell Telephone Company of Canada plans extended and re conditioned lines around Acton to add facilities and reduce party line subscribers. Buried cable will replace No 7 Highway east of town and existing poles will be removed. Other lines will be re conditioned with pole replacement and line straightening completing in fall.

Five Years for Burglar Caught in Acton Home

The burglar known by multiple aliases including James Coulter and James Lee was captured in Acton Wednesday night by Stan Anderson. He pled guilty in Milton before Magistrate Woodliffe and received five years at Kingston Penitentiary after police identified a watch and chain linked to a Toronto theft.

Action Public School Pupils Aid War Funds

Acton Public School pupils donated from funds raised at their concert this year. Twenty five dollars went to the Red Cross and ten dollars to the LODE Bomber Fund. Every pupil shared in supporting the war effort and the spirit is commended.

Two Pretty Weddings in Acton Churches Saturday

Velma Afielia Murray and Lloyd B. Millar united in marriage at the Acton United Church in a ceremony led by Rev. G C Gifford. The bride wore a white satin gown with a train, carried a Token rose bouquet, and was attended by two bridesmaids. Following the service a reception at the bride’s parents' home featured summer flowers and a three-tiered cake with about 100 guests.

Mrs M M Leitch of Acton was guest speaker at Bannockburn Women's Institute. She gave a paper on War and was joined by Mrs Roy Mekkeown and Mrs Fred Cole for readings. The meeting, chaired by Mrs S Matthews, closed with the National Anthem and a social lunch.
