The County Council debates the new equalization act impacting rural townships and civic municipalities. Acton faces a 12 percent rate rise while overall tax shifts reduce Burlington’s assessment and redraws territory, with 850000 removed from its value as towns resist higher rates.
Acton defeated Georgetown 83-85 in the opening lawn bowling match at the Benson on Thursday. The day featured five rinks with Georgetown leading in the afternoon before Acton rallied in the evening to claim a five rink net win. Weather favorable and surroundings praised.
A large Acton group enjoyed a day trip to Niagara Falls via the Gorge Stoute and the Chippewa, boarding at Prospect Park and returning to Acton by evening. They viewed the falls, Maid of the Mist, and Goat Island, with some visiting Buffalo. The outing ended with a pleasant late train arrival and overall success.

The Galarion Hoard of Education held a meeting to re-engage teachers with salary increases and approve payments to several staff members. A lengthy discussion covered repairs and improvements to school property during summer vacation. Principal Stewart asked to fund a technical library and laboratory equipment from concert proceeds, with the Board agreeing. Adjournment scheduled to reconvene on call of the Chair.
The remains of Miss Mary Mood were found in her home on William W. Scott’s farm near Limehouse Presbyterian Church. She had likely been dead for weeks, lived alone, and was a reticent warder lady around fifty. Scott’s family broke in when unable to reach her, and the coroner ordered no inquest. The burial occurred Saturday. she was a native of Stewarttown and sister of tanner William Hood.
A disastrous fire at Stewarttown on Thursday last destroyed the flour mill owned by Walter Lawson and operated by J Matthews. Firemen from Georgetown aided, but the building and machinery were largely lost. The mill, built by John and Duncan Stewart, had a long history with owners including Young, Stokes, Wood and McKinnon, Nose, Tweadle, and Lannon Drew. Estimated loss about 11,000 with 2,000 insured. public notice of a sale will be given at the Dominion Hotel, Acton, on Friday, July 5.
