Mr and Mrs Eugene Braida visiting in Italy report receiving the Free Press five days after mailing in Acton. Other towns such as fountain Hillsburgh and Moffat note delivery in about five to six days from Acton, suggesting distance no longer matters in newspaper delivery.
Legion Ladies' Auxiliary presented a cheque for 500 to the building fund during a dinner in their honor. The donation brings recent gifts to 1000. Joyce Buchanan, Auxiliary president, handed the cheque to Gordon Beatty, building committee chairman, as the Legion thanked the group in the renovated hall Friday.
About 75 Brownies from Milton Georgetown Acton and Norval enjoyed a first annual Revel Day in Milton. The event, sponsored by the North Halton District Brownie Association, featured fairy ring singing nature hunts and a pow wow. Mrs S E Wood urged yearly repeats.
Bands from Milton Fergus Trafalgar Township Guelph Oakville Brampton Burlington Port Credit and Kitchener will join Acton citizens for a Saturday parade. The program features separate numbers then massed brass and pipe band selections in the park followed by fireworks led by Bandmaster Perrott and parade marshall Dr A J Buthanan.
The Free Press announces a major upgrade to its page three section with seven full columns of pictures and stories. The change aims to improve advertising service reader interest and the presentation of one of the most important products in newspaper makeup today by adopting a modern electronic wonder.
Halton County again leads Ontario in the tuberculosis seal campaign with 1956 returns of 18 125, surpassing 1955. Average contribution 3 05 per contributor vs provincial 2 31. per capita 35 9c vs 20 9c. 27 percent of residents contributed vs 7 7 percent province wide. At Trafalgar Hall annual meeting, R F Bean outlined county progress and planned a mass survey for later year.
Milton high school awarded painting and lighting tenders at the district board meeting. G Farlow won 583.82 for three rooms and main hall plus stage, George Bundy 428.50 for electric lighting upgrades. Acton high school vacancies will be advertised again.
The Catholic Women's League ends its season with a Tuesday evening dinner in St Josephs Hall. A salad plate with cake and ice cream was served to members. Conveners were Mrs T Papillon and Mrs C MacColl. The event marked the close of the current season of activities.
Mrs. John Frank won $440 in the Chest Appreciation Day drawing last Saturday. She spent $31 more than expected during shopping, and the treasure chest pot rises to $440 for next week.
Mrs A J Buchanan reminded the Mission church youth graduation that they remain in the missionary family. Mrs E L Clifton opened with scripture and prayer. Graduates included Sandra Sinclair Lloyd Clifton Ruth Clow Dale Denny Ella Jang Marilyn Lemon Dorothy Rice Barbara Norton Julie Holmes Sue Walters Take my Life and Let it Be.
The Knox Presbyterian church unanimously extended a call to Rev Andrew H McKenzie to take the pulpit. Interim moderator Rev K G McMillan chaired the meeting. McKenzie, minister at St Andrew's Islington, is Knox College Toronto trained and is married with five children. decision awaits presbytery approval next Tuesday.
An inquest was ordered in Milton into the drowning death of eight year old Dorothy Snider at The Breezes recreation area near Fairy Lake. The accident occurred during a Dovercourt Road Baptist church picnic when a pontoon bridge overturned spilling several youths into the water. Firemen and police worked for hours but the girl died after being underwater for about 15 minutes.
Acton hosted Guelph in the Inter-Lawn Bowling League as perfect weather aided four Acton doubles wins. The 4–1 Acton victory left them atop the standings with Rockwood, which beat Georgetown the same night. Schedule shows Acton at Rockwood and Guelph at Georgetown.
A car driven by Ernest Harmer rolled over on the Fourth Line Esquesing near No 7 highway injuring six year old Alven Harmer whose elbow was fractured. She was treated at Acton and Guelph General hospitals and released. No other serious injuries. Damages from the crash estimated at 250 dollars. Two additional accidents near No 7 highway and Ballinafad road caused 735 dollars in damages Friday and Saturday evenings.
The concluding St John Ambulance Senior first aid class led by instructor Dave Penson from Huttonville included firemen and scout leaders. The boys watched a film on artificial respiration and practised the technique, then presented Mr Penson with a tie clip and cuff links after passing their tests.
Shoes hats coats and more sold quickly at the arena auction as volunteers led bids on furniture, dishes, and books. Winners Cranston Grivse and Mrs Kelly received hose lengths, and over $500 was raised for YMCA projects including swimming lessons and equipment.
Water use during the heat wave runs about 175 000 gallons daily with no need to use the auxiliary well at Warren Grove yet. The new well would add about 450 gallons per minute, boosting capacity from the current ~230 gpm, while storage at the reservoir and tank holds only 200 000 gallons. Officials seek new sources and higher storage as demand rises.
Top ten contestants in the Rotary club Queen for a Week contest were guests at a supper meeting. Each girl received a corsage and a compact bearing the Rotary crest. Entertainment was provided by Eric Paige who played the piano. Six more days of school.
Acton Chamber of Commerce announced this week that the July 1st family fishing day at Fairy Lake will not be held this year due to unavailability of stock fish especially bass and pike. Despite last year's derby drawing 150 anglers and 400 to 500 attendees, efforts to stock the lake failed and with the bass limit lifted the event is canceled for the summer.
