Speyside Its Century Ago Sawmills Hotels and Quarries

Speyside, halfway between Milton and Acton on Highway 25, once boasted seven streets, hotels, a tannery, sawmills, a quarry, stores, and a village hall. A century ago the area drew timber from Hume’s mill, stone from the Hume Quarry, and hops kilns dotted the landscape. The St Helena mill site and locals like Dredge, Hampshire, and Duff shaped early industry while the hills offered wide views from Cruickshank Street.
