The Prince of Wales will officially open the Canadian National Exhibition 1918. After a delay a preferred official portrait was chosen for Victory Year medals awarded in the Agricultural and other sections. The Prince appears hatless and coatless in campaign attire, to be shown on the medal and public program.
Acton will pay Manuel county rate $4 243 15 for the current year. The County Council granted $1 000 to the Navy Relief Fund and $700 to the Children's Shelter Gordon House. The finance committee recommended a grant of $1 090 to the Navy League and $450 toward construction with $4 650 to the shelter. Captain Waal thanked the Council on behalf of the League.
Oakville Star reports Rev T M Jeffries of Oakville is the oldest Orangeman in Canada in his 98th year, having joined 69 years ago after moving to Canada in 1845. He is also the oldest Methodist minister in the country, with local notes on regional incidents and a warning about dangerous firecrackers.
Mr Charlex Morton visited Exeter friends last week. Miss Mary McPherson and Maude Partridge of Guelph visited Acton. Rev Father Maunsell left for Port Arthur for a month. Mrs. McKinnon of Heaton is visiting Knox Church. Mrs W A Stewart and son Edger left for Rochester on a motorcycle trip. Miss Clarice Mills and Cecil Mills motored to Shelburne. Jean Pollick of Milton accompanied relatives to Owen Sound. Margaret Bennett appointed assistant principal at Grace Street Public School Toronto. A camp outings group from Erin to U Kum Inn cottage Stanley Park, with chaperone Miss Wallace, arrived in town. The old lady, seventy nine, plans to stay a month with Mr William Thompson.
In Memoriam notices report the sudden death of James Hassard, aged, in Ontario. He was born in County Fermanagh Ireland and moved to Canada at a young age. Survived by wife Jane Snell and four children, the funeral was conducted by Rev Alfred Jaycock and attended by many.
The town hall was crowded on Monday as ten returned soldiers were given a civic welcome. The procession traveled through Mill and Main Streets and Bower Avenue with the Hoey Scouts Band playing patriotic airs. A. T. Brown chaired the event with warm remarks, and H. P. Moore presented each soldier a gold watch inscribed with name, regiment, rank, and monogram.
The Acton school led the Halton county results at the High School Entrance Examinations. Rose McEvoy achieved the top score among Acton candidates, with Maria Mowat third in the county. Outside Acton, Ava Rad and Robert Croft also featured among successful examinees.
