At a Halton Liberal Conservative convention in Milton on Friday evening Dr. R K Anderson ex M B of Milton was unanimously chosen as the federal candidate for Halton County to contest the September 14 election. Speakers included M E Smith president George Hillmer Col G Geary and Anderson praised Stevens for exposing the Customs scandal and urged a clean government.
The Golden Jubilee marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Methodist Church in Acton now United Church of Canada. A Sunday service features Rev George W Barker of Grace Church Toronto and Rev T A Moore of Toronto with a jubilee program and an old fashioned tea.
Acton citizens join a Civic Holiday program featuring a garden party and program at the park. A community parade, violin recital and dance night are planned with Harry Dennett Miss Nellie McGhie Milan Thelma Oswin Olive Hudson Seeley and Acton Chiwena involved. The park improvements progress, aiming for Olwic Holiday completion.
The Acton Veterans Association had the Sealdiers Memorial guns repainted by Bugler Alex Trotter with the veterans supplying the paint. Miss Marjorie Price was omitted from a recent Acton School honors list. A new permanent refreshment booth is planned for Booth Park under the Women's Institute. Acton retained the Mercury Cup in a rink match against Guelph. The Acton Band will give a sacred concert after Golden Jubilee services at the United Church. A new traffic by law regulates street use and pedestrian safety.
A Special Council meeting discussed the waterworks situation after Superintendent Reid tendered his resignation effective July 2. The council and Hydro Commission planned a joint meeting to resolve duties and take over waterworks responsibilities while approving repairs to the baseball diamond and park booth plans.
The Park Improvements Committee and Municipal Council plan extensive changes at the Park entrance. A semi circular roadway will connect Park and Knox Avenues with new ticket offices, fencing, shrubbery, a bandstand, and a gated drive. Council endorses the plans and the Park Improvement Committee funds the project as Gala Day activities proceed next Monday.
Major Leroy Dale of Georgetown notifies Major J H Pedley that a silver cup will be offered as the Lachlan Grant Musketry Trophy for competition between Halton Rifles companies at the annual camp. The cup goes to the team with the fifteen highest individual scores at 200 and 500 yard ranges under rules to be set by a brigade committee. The cup becomes property of the first company to win three times. Brigades Field Day is planned at Long Branch Musketry Ranges with county residents invited to visit the regiment in the afternoon.
Fred Lee of Haron Street Toronto paid 400 and coate on a B O L A charge after arrest by Constables Padgett and Weatherup on a New Street. Three others Frank Zaphia Henry Gould jailed on bail 2000 each after being found with truck and cans valued around 6000. Michael Doyle faced magistrate Shicias for criminal negligence with 50 fine and two weeks to pay. James Lake and William Lowe also charged with drunkenness and reckless driving with fines and costs. A garden party and daque will be held by St Alpan Church. details next week.
Miss Bertie Smith was home from Toronto over Sunday. Several residents including Mrs. Thomas Gamble and Miss Myrtle Dis visited Acton relatives. Numerous visits by Toronto and Kingston visitors, weekending in Acton. Notable mentions include Rev J A McLachlan, M A, and Miss Ruth Nelson, missionary in Alberta, plus local weddings and engagements in nearby towns.
Ontario authorities probe the Oakville poisonings after 16 deaths traced to a wood alcohol batch from the United States. Bert D Angello held on manslaughter charges, with police examining a Hamilton source and a hidden shipment from Black Rock near Buffalo.
Members of St Albans Sunday School joined a Saturday afternoon trip to Stanley Park for a lively program. Rev Sawyer led the event with Superintendent Hun Rogers assisting as contests across classes entertained. notable results included Bert Hinton and Nora Waterhouse among several prize winners in races and games.
At a well attended Conservative convention in Guelph South Wellington riding elected Hon Hugh Guthrie as Liberal Conservative nominee unanimously. Col Pritchard of Flora and YT Hannigan of Guelph placed Guthrie before the meeting with no other names offered. Guthrie urged a sweeping Conservative victory in the coming federal elections.
Ontario Agricultural Societies Branch issue lists fall fair dates for districts including Acton Aberfoyle Brampton Burlington Streetville Toronto and nearby towns with events set across September October. The note also mentions drownings near Balsam Lake and two Detroit visitors spending time in Smiths Falls.
