Arrests Tied to Hamilton Murder Case Prompt Witness Held

A giant Negro, Norman Buckingham, was arrested four miles from Osyuga as a material witness in the Acton murder case. He admitted knowing Frank Sigluono of Hamilton and traveling with him before the crime. Buckingham remains in Hamilton jail as investigators pursue leads.

Murray Memorial Building Plans Discussed at Committee Meeting

At a Monday meeting of the Murray Memorial Committee in Acton Ontario, Rev. Bennie and other officials discussed building plans proposed by Mr. Mahoney for a 58 by 84 foot facility costing $20 000. The project may qualify for unemployment relief labor grants with council approval, and cooperation with Public Utilities Commission members Kerr and King was confirmed pending formal sanction from the HEP C and other arrangements.

Robbed Dairy Stirs Milton Amid Local Police Probe

Milton Dairy owned by Lawrence King was entered by thieves early Monday, a rear door broken to reach a cash register of about $30 in silver and several cheques. No suspects located. Provincial police are investigating.

Wedding at Guelph Church of Christ Disciples

Helen Ross Matthews of Rockwood wed Oliver John Thring son of Speedside in a July ceremony at the Church of Christ Disciples parsonage Guelph. Rev. S L Shippey officiated with two attendants. The couple plans to reside in Eramosa Township after a reception at the bride’s home and a motor trip to North Bay and Sudbury.

Eramosa Council Advances Fire Damaged School Repair

At a Monday meeting the Eramosa Township Council passed a by law authorizing $2000 debentures to be sold by the Clerk to cover part of the cost of rebuilding the S. S. No. 10 school, recently destroyed by fire. The Collector was told to collect arrears by distress if needed and accounts totaling $451.94 were approved for payment.

Barbers charged with wanton driving bail set at Brampton

Norman Barber of Orangeville admitted before Magistrate L J C Bulls Brampton to a $3000 bail on a criminal code charge of wanton and furious driving. The case stems from a serious accident on No 10 Highway north of Caledon Village on Tuesday night. Barber has been married only two weeks. Dr J H King, a Guelph physician, is favored as Liberal candidate for the South Wellington by election to replace Paul Munro who died in an automobile incident. The Liberal convention is set for next Saturday. King has long practiced in Guelph, having come from Morriston, and serves as treasurer of the South Wellington Liberal Association.

Acton District Ex-Wardens Elect New Officers at Grimsby Picnic

E M Readhead of Acton was named President of the Ex-Wardens Association of Halton and Peel while other officers were elected at the annual Grimsby Beach Park gathering. The report also notes Acton Citizens' Band concerts in Erin Acton Eden Mills and Edgewood Park and an Acton Masonry honor for R M MacDonald. Additionally a murder case in Wellington County spurred police inquiries and a near fatal truck train crash near Mount Pleasant.

Acton Loses In High Scoring Georgetown Rout

Acton fell to Georgetown 13 to 9 in a marathon game highlighted by a decisive eighth inning rally by Georgetown. Pitcher Telfer struggled in the eighth as Georgetown mounted a 9 run frame while Acton could muster only three in the ninth.

Thomas D. Hume Dies After Illness at 67

Milton resident and former owner of the Princess Theatre Thomas D. Hume died at Guelph General Hospital after weeks of illness. In his 68th year he served Knox Church as an active member and was Past Master of St. Clair Masonic Lodge Milton and Past President of the Milton Golf and Country Club. His wife predeceased him by six years. Survived by a son Rex Hume of Burlington.

Death of Halton County resident David Shuert at Campbellville

David Shuert of Campbellville in Halton County died suddenly at home after feeling unwell in the evening. A Palermo native aged seventy eight, he farmed near Milton before retiring eighteen years ago. He was a Presbyterian. survived by widow Jane Hay, one son Nelson, and three sisters Mrs A D Dice of Milton, Mrs W Wall of Camrose Alberta, and Mrs J Rixon of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Drowned Port Credit Girl in Wiarton incident

Sylvia Lorenz twelve year old from Port Credit Ontario drowned while swimming from an old wreck at Colpoys Bay near Wiarton She was visiting an aunt Mrs Herbert Elie with two companions Doris Schroeder and Kathleen Cook who tried to help and were dragged under Older girls Marjorie McFadder and Gloria Wagner rescued the others Sylvia sank and body was found an hour later efforts at resuscitation failed.

Acton Citizens' Band to Play at Edgewood Park Concert

Acton Citizens' Band will give an afternoon concert at Edgewood Park this Sunday. The Lorne Rifles Scottish Band of Georgetown performs at Rockwood on Sunday July 29 at 2 30 pm. A garden party in Acton Park on Thursday August 2 under Band auspices features the Happy Cousins Concert Co. Massed Georgetown bands with 55 players expect a fine program. Tickets 25c and 50c.
