Workers apply black asphalt to repair sidewalks on John Street South Willow Street South and Church Street between two blocks. The paving aims to fix tripping hazards and keep tricycles and children's toys from being thrown by uneven concrete.
The council plans to submit a by law to the Ontario Municipal Board and adopt a $46 000 expense for an arena front addition plus $18 000 for refrigeration installation and $2 000 for equipment housing. A letter with the by law details pledges to the Community Centre Fund and other aid for construction. Architects are to prepare specs for a new steel truss and columns at the west end to replace deteriorating wood, improving sightlines. Delay on demolition of the old rink remains pending committee study, with a next meeting expected for further action.
The Rev. Andrew Kenzie runs a Vacation Bible School at Knox AO Hear Bible Stories. Forty children attended Monday and Tuesday, ages from three to twelve, with preschoolers Trudy Tocbes and Carol McKenzie among the youngest. Sessions run Thursday and Friday as an ongoing experiment before holidays.
The Holl Shop run by E. Hulaman moves from its former site to the former George Benton butcher building. The new larger space on Mi Street expands display areas for groceries and dry goods. Clerk is Miss Theresa Huisman.
After the Rotary dinner meeting members moved to president Dave Manes’s home for a club forum on Rotary information led by the Rev. A. H. McKenie. Four visitors attended while a classification talk by Louis Waso Wicz is slated for next Tuesday.
Eight children were baptized Sunday morning at Acton United Church. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. Dwight Engel, clerk of the session, with Orwell Johnston listed among attendees. Names include Douglas Gordon and Peter James among others.
County representatives from Halton Wellington and Peel met at Stewartown Hall to plan a large September gathering of about 100 planners councillors and school board heads. Credit Valley Conservation Authority led discussions with John Pearson noting the need for cooperative action against promiscuous development.
Last Sunday morning Knox Presbyterian Church welcomed three new members. Mrs F G Hepburn joined by profession of faith while Mr and Mrs David Cieland joined by transfer of certificate.
Thirty youths from across Ontario toured Fort York on July 7 staying in the historic site with 30 winners including six from Speyside Central School. Winners Victoria Newton Carol Swackhamer Gary Buttenham Paul Fisher Albert Vlidstra and Larry Fletcher attended.
