Acton Public Utilities Commission met Tuesday with Gordon C. Smith resigning after enlisting in the Canadian Militia. The board accepted the resignation and vowed to keep his former position open, while advertising the vacancy and scheduling a July 17 special meeting to review applicants.

Subhas Chandra Bose, rival to Mahatma Gandhi and head of Leftist factions within the Nationalist Party, has been detained under defence regulations. Bose led campaigns for stronger action toward independence as Gandhi’s mass resistance continues.
Visitors from Acton to the Boys Camp at Beausoleil Island amid Honey Harbor report ideal weather and a wonderful day. The group, including YMCA directors and ladies, traveled by launch from the government dock, with two canoes and two rowboats available. The camp features a well built shelter, camp store, cook house, tents, a fine dock and improved swimming beach. Activities included swimming races canoeing and rowing contests, with two meals shared by the directors and the boys.
A group of seven Acton children around age ten raised 8.00 for the Duke of Devonshire LO.D.E. Bomber Fund. They hosted a penny toss, can knockdown, bingo, and a zoo attraction at Jimmie Spee’s, collecting coins and bills in a tin box for delivery to Mrs. J. M. McDonald.
Esquesing Township Council held meetings on Friday and Tuesday with Reeve Wm. A. Wilhon presiding. Debates covered Halton Brick taxes, Acton Esquesing and Halton Agricultural Society grants, road expenses, relief accounts, and a Hydro Electric Contract cancellation. The council approved funds for utilities and fairboard grants and adjourned to August 5.
The Budget vote was reached Friday after a week of speeches and a flare up between parties. Dr Bruce criticized high taxation and urged funding war by borrowing. He argued current revenue should cover war costs, while taxation could curb luxuries and spur postwar reconstruction.
The Dominion Day reunion of Lorne School raised funds totaling 24 dollars donated to Acton and District Red Cross Society. The remaining balance was invested in War Savings Bonds. Organizers consider plans to mark the school's sixtieth anniversary in coming years.
The Halton Peel Children’s Aid Society reports confusion over registering children through multiple groups. Superintendent C F Thompson says government rules require all applications go through the Children’s Aid Society, covering registrations already made via voluntary bodies. The Society offers full cooperation and asks all applications be sent to its counties office in Feel and Halton.
A Knox Church garden party last night drew a lively crowd in the park. The Lorne Scots Band from Georgetown opened with a strong program before Mount Forest’s Shiels Family Entertainers performed. Mr Shiels and five daughters, including vocalists who can dance, led community singing with Rev H L Bennie presiding. A well-patronized refreshment booth offered a variety of foods.
The July meeting of the Rockalong Women's Institute met at Mrs. George Laverty's with Mrs. C. Plamk presiding. Members planned a district cooperative project and a July garden party. Miss Helen Bayne took the motto. Red Cross head Mrs. Spencer outlined Red Cross work. Laura Tone spoke on Aliens registrations. Mrs. Harris and Mrs. D. McNabb presented a skit on Garden Gadgets and gardening demonstrations followed.
The Eramosa Township council met at Rockwood Town Hall with Reeve D D Gray presiding and councillors present. Grants were received from the Eramosa Plowman's Association and the Erin Agricultural Society and laid over for August. By law 7 set county and township rates totaling 6.1 mills and 22 mills with Rockwood 7.7 and Eden Mills 0.25.
A large crowd gathered on Saturday for Acton Business Men's Association War Savings Stamp draw on the block between Main and Church Streets. Mrs. R P Watson won a five dollar bond. ten more winners received one dollar stamps. Twelve names drew no response and lost awards. two children helped conduct the drawing with Andrew Nicol.
Mrs Peter Smith hosted a Duke of Devonshire LO.D.E. tea at Hill Hall with Mrs E. Barr as Regent. About 75 to 100 guests toured the gardens and enjoyed piano solos by Arana McDonald and Mary Sibbet. Prizes were awarded for baking art, sugar, deer, and cake contests.
Gregory Theatre in Acton joins a national effort to raise 160000 in War Savings Stamps in one Monday night. The plan is simple patrons buy two War Savings Stamps at the box office keep the stamps and watch the film while theatre owners cover the cost. A commendable effort encouraging public support.
Last Thursday evening Mrs Margaret Worden A T C M and her pupils held their annual recital at the home of Mr and Mrs A K Mann. The program featured piano solos and duets by the pupils. The pupils presented Mrs Worden with a purse of appreciation for extra help with examination and festival work. Mrs Worden thanked them briefly. Refreshments and a social hour followed.
The Nassagawewa Township Council met July 3 1940 with all members present and the Reeve presiding. Minutes of the last meeting and communications were read and discussed. Accounts ordered paid include Relief Officer 60 Road Superintendent 1600 33 Miscellaneous 142 09. Council adjourned to meet August 5 at one o clock.
The Knox YW A picnic was held on Tuesday afternoon in Acton Park with contests and races. Winners included Betty Wilds, Betty Kirknes, Franklin Spiel Vogel, Helen Johnson, Jimmie Spitel Vogel, and Delores Lappin. Mary Matthews and Elmima Spielvogel won the thread the needle race. Mrs In Kenny and Mrs Fred Anderson helped with events. the day closed with a peanut scramble and a communal picnic supper.
Acton community lists 60 men enlisted by July 8 in the Royal Canadian Navy and various Canadian forces. The roster credits H V Dron and F L Wright for help compiling and notes Lorne Scots training boosted Army recruitment.
