Former Mrs Sidney Franklin appears in a Las Vegas ceremony as she becomes the bride of Nelson Eddy. Eddy, preparing for a concert tour, will be accompanied by his new wife on the trip.
The Young People's Union of the United Church held a social evening with art readings and music. Miss Velma Murray read scripture and Miss LaVerne Smith gave a reading while Dor othy McKenzie performed a piano solo. Jim McIntyre spoke on Gandhi and India. Audrey MacArthur sang. Next week features a Rockwood Players play Choosing a Wife.
A large blaze destroyed the old Bobbin factory at Glen Williams last Thursday evening. The unoccupied frame building had been used as a residence since the factory closed years ago. Miss Dorothy Wagstaffe spotted the flames around 6.15 but fire was already out of control. cause is undetermined.
The note teases last week’s Puzzle Poem and promises a new challenge with an Ace of WarE Diamond card. Readers are invited to join the fun and mail entries to a Post Office address for a chance to win, though prizes require sending in solutions.
Bloomsbury Literary Society hosted a Friday social evening with a euchre tournament. Prizes went to Miss Mayme and Mrs A M McPherson for the ladies, Mr Cameron Ramshaw and Wallace Lasby for the gentlemen, plus a lucky door prize won by Leslie McAlpine. A hearty supper of beans scalloped potatoes pie and coffee followed, then dancing to finish a most enjoyable event.
Acton Juniors dropped their second game of the year losing to Milton 5 to 3. Milton scored two early goals and added two more in the second period while Acton answered with goals by Gay and Brush. Referee Clements fined no penalties in the opening frame. later penalties went to Bayliss, Bowring, and W Coxe.
Halton County Council held its second meeting in Milton with most members present. Major Browne of the Salvation Army spoke, requesting support. the council granted 50 to the Salvation Army of Hamilton. Hospital accounts were reviewed and passed after discussion. A Middlesex County resolution opposed changes to the Lord's Day Act. Grey County urged Hydro to supply wire and insulators at cost to rural customers. The Deputy Minister outlined a possible County Board of Assessors and Good Roads actions were approved, including a $15 membership fee and attendance at the Road Supervisors Conference.
Friday’s meeting at the school under President Jim McIntyre featured a strong program by society ladies. Laura Johnston chaired as Wilma and Helen West presented vocal duets, Jean Mann recited, Lorena Locker tap danced, and Alma Watson again performed duets with Arnie Entakavitch. Mr Berry from the Acton Short Course spoke on Canada from coast to coast, followed by a skit by four girls Isabel Swackhamer Wilma West Babe McCaig and Margaret MecPhail. The National Anthem concluded the program before lunch and social time.
The Bannockburn Literary Society held a successful social night with an ouchre and dance. Prizes awarded to ladies Dora Denny and Mrs Hugh McCutcheon and to gents Harvey Young and Jos Scott. Consolation prizes went to Grace Gibson and Harvey Fisher. After lunch, dancing continued.
Oakville is expected to drop out of the group after a planned game with Acton, as Oakville has not won any league game this season. The home game was moved to Orangeville and, if Oakville retires, standings won't change since all teams had wins against them.
At the annual meeting of the Acton Library Board Rev. E A Brooks was named Chairman and Mr Keil Gibbons Secretary Treasurer. M M Leitch joined as a new board member replacing A T Brown who resigned with board approval. The group approved a new encyclopedia and dictionary, planned a suitable case for easy reference, and restricted book purchases to Book Buying Committee trips.
Acton Women's Institute held two meetings at Mrs. G H Lantz home last week. First meeting featured demonstrations on roasting meat tenderloin and broiling steak with a lunch. second meeting covered supper dishes ham mousse Swiss steak deviled steak scalloped ham sweet bread and crown roast of sausage with another dainty lunch. Leaders demonstrated dishes and shared recipes to the appreciation of attendees.
An astonishing newborn calf near Acton survived a week without feeding. Farmer Smith Griffin rushed a cow to aid the herd when the calf was born, found dead a day later, but a week later the calf turned up alive on a neighbor’s farm in good condition with one ear frozen off.
Three Rural Hockey League games in Acton produced one win by Acton Band over Rockwood 2-0 and two 2-2 ties between Norvalk and Brookville and between Hornby and Georgetown Pirates. Midgame collapses were avoided as refereeing kept play clean. Upcoming matchups include Huttonville versus Rockwood and Brookville versus Lorne.
The Bloomsbury Literary Society held its regular meeting in the school with Mac McLaughlin as chair. A sequence of performances followed including mouth organ and banjo pieces, readings by Mildred Wilson and Mrs Nelson McLaughlin, a Montreal city talk by Ross Patterson, and a prize contest won by Mrs van Goozen and Mrs Watson. A luncheon hosted by Mrs Watson and Mr McArthur capped the evening.
A special Eramosa township meeting at Rockwood Town Hall on January 23 7 30 pm presided by Reeve Dr Gray moved to have the clerk collect bylaw copies from neighboring municipalities about out of municipality milk vendors and invite Rockwood vendors to speak. Officials seek road grant for 1938 and advertise for a road superintendent with salary 40 cents per hour up to 500 dollars. adjournment set for February 13 at 1 30 pm.
Lakeside Chapter 1.0.D.E. held a Tuesday social at the YMCA social room. Mrs John McNiven won first prize and Miss Bernice Reid second prize. A luncheon was served as part of the event.
Humphries known as Public Enemy No 1 in Chicago police files, said to be an ally of Al Capone, appeared in a Chicago court to answer charges tied to an alleged $50,000 kidnapping. A government attorney claimed the defendant owes income tax on his share of the ransom.

Acton romped to a 12-5 hockey victory over Preston, with E Marzo scoring early and Norm Morton delivering two late bursts. Schrumm locked down the Preston attack as Acton built a commanding lead, then closed with a dominant second period powered by quick goals and disciplined defense.
