Acton firefighters earned an honorable mention this week after a county fire system demonstration. Judges praised the team for skill and safety at a Halton County event with notes on performance and cooperation among crews.
John H. Goy was elected chairman of the newly formed recreation committee during the second session of the year on January 17. The committee includes five standing panels with Doug Widdis and Len Lovell among members. plans discussed include a winter ice program and potential joint meetings with the parks board on a wading pool and community center. Lloyd Minshall of the Department of Education will meet with the recreation committee and parks board to discuss hiring a full time secretary and program scheduling for regular second Thursday meetings.
Halton Cream Producers sponsored a color battle protest against yellow margarine with township council endorsement. Councilors were noncommittal as Physicians Services Inc feared outlining the medical service program. The council approved a $1077 Hornby Park expense share and delegated all members including the road superintendent to attend the February Roads Convention in Toronto.
Firefighters battled a blaze Thursday evening January 17 at a home in Glenlea Subdivision Wynford Place. A heat lamp under the house caused the fire. no damage estimate yet available.
The town workvard reports about 790 tons of sand and salt ready for winter road conditions. Clerk Jack McGeadhle says only a small portion has been used so far and expects the stockpile to be adequate through spring, noting it compares favorably with 700 tons used in prior years.
The Trinity United Church held its annual meeting chaired by Rev. Dwight Angel. Elders increased from 25 to 28, stewards up to 12, with new members Norma Pryer Lloyd Gohn John Bousfield Mrs Alf Long and Mrs Anthony Tronside named. Administrators and officers reappointed, budget set at 22328 with policy changes to missionary and maintenance giving.
The Acton Agricultural Society met Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Community Centre. A finance report showed expenditures of 7 338.09 dollars. Retiring president Nino Baida thanked officers, directors, and donors including the Ladies’ Beard for their work and the fair. 4H club support and the society’s role were praised by Agricultural Representative J. A. Francis. The year marks the 50th 4H anniversary and 30th Acton Agricultural Society anniversary with officers listed for the coming year.
Sports celebrities from Canada and the U S plan to attend the Acton Lions Club dinner at the region auditorium. Maurice Richard Maurice Rocket Richard is listed as a guest with others including Danny Nikolyh Toronto Argonauts star, Lumsden swimmer, Tim Geohagen wrestler, and Bill Adair Maple Leafs manager. Some Toronto and New York players may join, with confirmation pending. The dinner will be followed by a hockey game at the community center featuring St Michael’s College juveniles vs Acton Lions Juniors.
The night school group weighs the annual meeting as parents discuss classes while adults plan next year’s budget. Attendance dipped and a $100 balance sparks talk on fees and continuing programs with a few new officers sought.
Acton Branch 197 Legion members heard Mayor George Barbeau laud their community work at a Saturday dinner. Dignitaries included Halton MP Harry Eberley and clergy from St. Joseph, United Church, and St Alban’s as retiring president James Milne handed over to Max Storey amid thanks from the Legion family.
Sally Wilson placed ninth in novice ladies singles while Linda Bratdd finished tenth in juniors at Galt. Sally skated My Fair Lady in blue with white and silver accents under coach Mrs Patricia Hoy of Guelph club. Linda Bratdd wore black with white sequins and trained by Richard Rimmer of Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club. Other skaters from Georgetown and Acton trained locally with seven oclock morning practice sessions.
Ken Hardman was appointed chairman of Acton Planning Board at the inaugural meeting. Wes Musules and Dave Manes joined, with Aldo Broida R. H. Elliott and H. H. Hinton continuing. Beardmore and Company’s rezoning request for three Mill Street and two Church Street lots was denied.
New Esquesing administration building near Stewarttown shows completion of brickwork and precast roofing with interior work continuing. Workmen aim to meet the architect’s occupancy date in April despite zero weather, furnace cooling and portable heat sources aiding progress.
