Ross Taylor of Toronto, 43, suffered a fractured hip and cuts when a wax-laden tractor-trailer rolled twice on No. 7 highway on the town’s west edge. The driver said he jackknifed while passing a car and braking suddenly. Taylor was hospitalized in Guelph.
The Acton council held a quiet ninety minute session reviewing municipal business including annexation hearing preparations for February 23 and a library board report. G W McKenzie noted 1953 library expenditures of 1500 and a growing circulation while underscoring a $2200 early grant with $900 more available.
The Y's Men club heard Al Vino from the Ontarys Department of Travel and Publicity as guest speaker. He discussed the department's services, showed a Champiar Today film, and distributed maps to help travelers locate camp sites and suitable accommodations.
The Knox Presbyterian church Women’s Missionary Society held its first meeting at Miss Ruby Clarke’s home on Bower Ave. Devotions were led by Mrs H Alliso and the new study Where et Sun was introduced by Mrs Al Buchan Mrs F Blow and Mrs HL Bennie. The program featured a discussion on Peestydec ar VTamera and the church’s missionary work.
A letter from Manitoba reveals a distant family tie to Marc grandparent Jane Sprowl and Robert Sprwi. The writer, LM Davdsex of Brandon, Manitoba, seeks confirmation of kinship to Mr Sprowl and invites contact if visiting Manitoba.
A local rally selects new officers from a meeting of a women’s MG group. Samar e Soest Cherem is noted among those elected as part of the Prechyter group during the event held at the church.
John Joseph Stewart was unanimously chosen Warden of Halton County Council for 1954 at the inaugural meeting in County Buildings. Nine new council members joined the 18 member body, with committees named for assessments roads buildings hospitals agriculture and more.
Readers missing Acton memories struggle to locate the new High School. The site is the old Quantle Farm east on Mill Street beyond the Ryder property. Only a couple of balding lots remain undeveloped with homes beyond toward the Mann farm on the third line. East of the C N R tracks shows the most building activity in Acton.
The Halton County Girl Guide and Brownie leaders held their annual meeting in Acton with 40 commissioners and Sea Rangers attending from nearby counties. Reports covered camping and local programs. Mrs Cook received the Brown Owl award and Mrs Sawyer was honored in a humorous skit before a social lunch.
Vic Masters leads the Acton Minor Sports Association with ten town league teams across three divisions this season. Six junior teams, two seniors, and two Paperweights compete weekly, with ice time donated by town authorities. Players supply skates and a hockey sink. fees are none.
Sunday two accidents near Acton involved a Hudson driven by Joseph Jackson and a horse on Highway 25 two miles south of town. The vehicle suffered about $600 damage while the horse owner estimated losses at $825. A second crash on Esquesing’s third line east of Acton billeted two Ford cars with about $225 damage due to ice and snow.
The Home and School Association held a meeting at the public school auditorium Monday with 1 member present to hear Rev WA Young, chaplain and lecturer at the Ontario Agricultural College. Mr Don Schroeder showed a light program of photos, then Mr Young spoke on The Art of Living with anecdotes and philosophy. A social half hour followed with coffee and doughnuts served by the committee.
At the Monday council meeting in Acton in 1954, Bing Ramsden was announced as president with Charles Mason as vice president Elmer Smith as treasurer and Alfred Persantos to Spielvegel named as bandmaster for the Acton Citizens' Band.
Acton Public school celebrated the 75th birthday of George Mann with a social after school. Mann has served as head of Averchools for 27 years amid staff changes and a large pupil body, with many friends from school and the wider community wishing him well.
