Acton again defeats Oakville 4-2 in a juniors hockey clash as Oakville’s two goals prove lucky. The local tilt featured rough play, multiple penalties, and standout goaltending while Acton mounted a late comeback amid a bruising, high tempo contest.
Monday’s voting produced varied results across Halton and surrounding towns. Oakville elected its first woman councilor by a slim four vote margin, Milton approved a by law for the Milton Spinning Mills by 227 to 14, and Newmarket supported the drys with 1070 opposed to 782 in the beer and wine plebiscite.
The inaugural Public Utilities Commission meeting was held with Commissioners Arnold Hansen and others present. They appointed acting chairman for the evening, discussed monthly meetings on the fourth Friday, and requested auditors to classify campaign-related funds. The secretary was tasked with obtaining an explanation of forms from the Compensation Board and Workmen’s Compensation pact.

Alex Melxane of the Highway Garage is appointed automobile examiner for Acton, succeeding Geo. L. King. A fatal pedestrian collision on Peter Street Port Credit is reported with coroner adjournment. Community events include a crokinole party, Bible class officer elections, and a 53rd wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Nicol of Guelph. Hornby District L O L holds annual meeting with strong growth and officers installed by the grand master.
In Acton the inaugural 1936 council session reappoints committees and names new auditors and tax officials. The meeting approves borrowing by law, sets the next meeting for January 20, and orders a two week trial of arena sound equipment to improve skating events.
Esquesing Township election yields George Currie re elected as Reeve with 726 votes over L G Mullin. Deputy Reeve goes to N Robinson 601 over G W Murray 504. Council seats go to W A Wilson 695, Howard May 603, A E Harrop 505.
Col Buchan praised the GH version, congratulating Robert Conan on Was characterization of Richard Thin nny, perfect in his view. He and Vuehan, both movie fans, attended a Silver Jubilee event where Buchan joined Peerage as Lord Tweedsmuh and saw the London preview at New Gallery Theatre before the feature at the Giresory Theatre Friday.
A selection of community items includes editorial note inviting signed letters for publication and a report on the Ladies’ Aid Society meeting at the United Church hosted by Mrs. Symon. Devotional led by Mrs. J Bell, scripture by Mrs. Johnstory, prayers by Mrs. Morrow, and plans for the year outlined. A social hour and luncheon followed with committees named for Parsonage, Church Kitchen, and Visiting duties.
Three Acton residents suffered injuries in a New Year’s Eve car accident in Guelph. Mrs I G Allen remained hospitalized with three fractured ribs and a fractured hip. Late Allen and Erle Joinlow of the Bank of Nova Scotia staff escaped serious harm as the vehicle skidded on street car tracks and struck a hydro pole. The car was badly damaged. Winslow swerved to pass a parked vehicle as another car driven by Mrs Roberts struck the damaged pole. all occupants survived with no serious injuries.
Local notices list a Curling Club meeting on Friday at 7 30 p.m. in the Arena with J M McDonald urging attendance. Knox Church Ladies’ Aids host a Mystic Tea date to be announced. A Home Buba and Tea event is planned at United Church School Roof on Thursday January 23 at 4 00 p m with modern sound. An all ages social at YOARCG AL on Saturday January 11 features group games and dancing with refreshments.
