Fragmentary 1915 era notices describe calls for national unity and legal citizen duty as Germany’s war stance dominates. Reports mention arrests for drunkenness, Ontario Temperance stats, hospital cases, and ceremonial military gifts amid a village Christmas week with parades, school events, and troop celebrations.
Aton residents celebrated the return of two Canadian soldiers from the front with a civic reception at the town hall. Wreaths, songs by the Citizens Band, and speeches by local officials honored their service and Franco Belgian front duty. A New York donor sent $10 to the Red Cross, praising Canadian bravery.
The death of Mrs. J. Chantae Mab at Toronto General Hospital Sunday morning brings keen sorrow to her husband and many friends. Mrs Matthews had been in poor health for some time and died after heart disease followed attacks of inflammatory phthisis. She was in hospital in Guelph for several weeks then Toronto. Her husband and sister Roby Cox of Rockvale spent hours with her before demise. Mrs Matthews was the eldest of eight daughters and two sons, married to Mr Matthews in 1904. The family moved from Colorado to Acton in 1911 and previously lived in Ganaen City and Denver. She leaves a son James, ten years old. A devout Christian and Methodist, she was active in church work and the choir. Funeral services were held at the local postmaster’s home with Rev. Mr. Wiles officiating. interment in Canon City. Masters James will live in Denver with Mr and Mrs A B Matthews.
A Canadian battalion marched from Vloo Battalion to Westminster to lay Ontario colors in the Abbey. Clergy and officers led prayers, hymns, and a display honoring Britain and its dominions. Notable singers from Calgary, Portage la Prairie, Winnipeg, Guelph, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto performed, with remarks praising service and fidelity to empire delivered at the altar.
The annual Christmesse offering at the Acton Methodist Sunday School raised the year’s missionary gift to 162.44 dollars. Graduates from the primary class were honored with diplomas while J. S. Oplenpai read a history of the school’s progress. Superintendent J. P. Moore received a carved cane with an inscription, and addressed the assembly about thirty years of service.
A dated livestock inventory lists cows and calves with color marks and due dates in January. Items include red cows with fresh calves, red heifers due January, roan heifers due late January, and several milking cows noted as in calf or ready for sale, with some locations or misread terms.
