Chesley editor suffers a stroke while playing checkers with a colleague in the Enterprise office lake area. Doctors say condition uncertain for two or three days as the family awaits definite diagnosis. The incident is linked to rare frost and calm at the lake.
Preston defeated Acton 8-3 to clinch the group championship at Acton Arena last Thursday. The final period saw Preston hold a 5-1 edge in the game and an 8-3 margin in the round, despite Acton’s strong effort and Dad Farrell’s slightly generous call.
A large crowd of about 1,200 watched Acton and Preston clash in a lively hockey game. Acton led early but Preston pulled ahead with two goals, and despite Acton pressing late, Preston finished with a 5 1 victory.
At a tense meeting the Utilities Commission reviewed paying hydro and waterworks accounts totaling 2408.27 and discussed charging expenses to departments. The group debated a proposed Murray Memorial building on Mill Street and sought an option in a 90 day period with plans from an architect. The Thetford opposed the project and urged council input.
Reports say Carnochan, injured two weeks ago when pinned beneath a tree at work in the bush near Acton, remains in critical condition with a broken back among injuries. A parish hall bridge and euchre party raised funds with prizes won by Mrs. F. Roney, Mrs. F. Anderson, and Mrs. B. Mowat. Betty Turner escaped serious harm after jumping from a sleigh on Mill Street as a following automobile nearly struck her. Golden wedding celebrated at Milton for Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Allan born in Milton County and linked to Campsville. United Church Young People League held a regular meeting with plans for an upcoming play and business items.
Nassagaweya Council met Monday February 12 to review the auditors report. It found the accounts satisfactory and appointed Mr Edge as caretaker of Memorial plot. Vouchers list relief payments to multiple individuals and general municipal expenditures.
A Wednesday evening gathering at the United Church discussed the New Canada Movement. Three Ontario Agricultural College delegates from Guelph gave speeches promoting agricultural study, nonpolitical aims, and a more informed citizenry to shape Canada’s future. Chester O. Plank presided and to lead a local unit was chosen.
Georgetown defeated Acton 4 to 3 to win the Smith Trophy game and push to a one-goal deficit as Acton Juniors prepare to travel to Georgetown next Tuesday. Ritchie led Georgetown with two goals, while E Marzo scored all three for Acton and was named outstanding on the ice as tensions flared during a mid game melee.
Players argue little, referee Test praised for managing intense tension as Dewhurst suffers a black eye but finishes play. Acton and Georgetown vie for the P A Smith Trophy with Acton lauding Test’s officiating amid a string of recent matches.
Fire swept through the residence of A Neilson in Bequesing Township around 8 o clock Friday night destroying the dwelling and much of the furniture. Neighbors acted quickly but the blaze caused extensive damage and left a loaned sum of about 2000 partly insured. The cause is believed to be overheated stovepipes and the bar and seed were damaged in the blaze.
A series of community announcements lists St Patrick's Supper and programme at United Church on Friday March 16, Knox Players presenting The Sun Rise Trail in Norval on March 1 under Norval Choral Society, and a regular Women's Institute meeting at Mrs Kee’s on Thursday March 1. Also noted are literary three act drama events at United Chowah House and a George in a Jam presentation in Acton with evening shows at 6 15 p.m.
