Dublin Women’s Institute captured first place at the Canadian Hobby and Crafts show in Toronto for an original quilt design. Miss Minnie Somerville received a $100 prize for the group. The quilt features UK and Canada emblems with Royal motifs and commemorates a Royal visit in 1951.

Theft attempt at Roxy Theatre after final show
Minor rifling was reported after the last show at the Roxy Theatre. Manager H. Deveau said all seats and behind stage areas were checked before lock-up. A patron allegedly hid behind curtains then tried to find loose money, forcing a filing cabinet with scissors but no money was taken. The men's washroom cupboard was opened, no damage done, and the front door was found open in the morning.

Knox Choir Hosts Ladies' Aid Dinner Evening
On Thursday evening February 5 Knox choir and spouses joined the Ladies' Aid for a social night. Dinner at 7 featured turkey and trimmings, followed by a program with Rev. R. H Armstrong as master of ceremonies. Mrs Parker and Mr Les Duby performed, Dr A J Buchanan showed church photos, and thanks were offered by Mrs A M McDonald and Mr E A Hansen. R L Davidson of Acton has been named chairman of the Esquesing school area board succeeding Hector Bird. Other board members include Bird, Bingham, Dunningham and Dobbie. Rising pupil enrollment pressures threaten Norval and Stewarttown, with senior students bused to Georgetown and Dublin district pupils traveling to Acton. A new Norval school is being considered but no action taken yet.

Fire Aid Meeting Held in Acton
Acton Volunteer Fire Department hosted the Halton County Mutual Aid meeting at Acton Town Hall on February 8 with Chief Celements of Milton presiding. Wilfred Bird urged district numbering for Acton Georgetown and Milton. Chief Putnam of Kitchener spoke for the Ontario Fire Chief's Association. Burlington's Chief Walmsley announced nine new fire halls and a $38,000 Cooper Construction two story building with three truck bays to be completed in four months. Lunch followed.

Y.M.C.A. board honored Charles Wood with a wallet at the February 3 meeting. Dick Bean presented the gift and Wood thanked the group. Tree topples during cutting cuts power to two homes
A 15 foot poplar on the Lappin property brought down a hydro pole on Main St south last Thursday. The incident cut power to D. Lappin and B. Veldhuis from 3:11 AM to 4:45 PM while four workers removed the danger and service lines were repaired. Damage to the pole was estimated at 20. Traffic remained unaffected.

Flood Relief Operetta Drive Launched By ODE Group
The ODE group and local organizations formed a flood relief committee led by Joe Hurst to raise funds for Britain and the Netherlands flood victims. Lakeside Chapter I ODE pledged 200 dollars, while schools and clubs plan donations and an industrial canvass with official receipts from town hall.

Wood Promoted to Installation Superintendent of Western Area
Charles E. Wood of Acton is named installation superintendent of the Western Area for Northern Electric Company a move announced in Northern News. He has served since 1949 and joined Northern Electric in 1924 advancing through supervisory roles. He helped inaugurate the Alaska Highway telephone link in 1942 and has been active in local affairs including Acton council Public Utilities Commission North Halton High School District Board and Acton YMCA. He and Mrs. Wood and their son Dick will relocate to Toronto but hope to return to Acton someday.
