Explosion wrecks Milton pump house on Robert St

An air explosion tore through the Milton municipal pumping station on Robert Street destroying the brick building. One man, George Prior, suffered second degree burns and about 30 percent of his body. Damage is estimated at 10 to 15 thousand dollars. Fire crews responded to the post midnight blast as neighbors reported shock and frightened households. Ground nearby rocked and the roof collapsed unevenly. The blast likely stemmed from gasoline powered equipment amid heavy rainfall.

Rain Spoils Highland Games at Victoria Park Fergus

The 24th Highland Games at Victoria Park Fergus was a total washout with rain from about 1 pm through the afternoon and evening. Attendance will be tallied later but officials estimate about half of last year’s 10 000. Gordon Sinclair spoke briefly in Scottish dress and noted family ties to Fergus. He later caused a stir driving his Rolls Royce into a steel fence while seeking a quicker route.

Village cleans Main Street after storm repairs

Erin village workers from Cox Construction swept Main Street last week then fire department washed the street after heavy rain on Saturday. King Paving Co finished extensive sidewalk repairs using hot mix asphalt for economical service and improved condition.

The Guelph parks department marked Elmer the Safety Elephant's tenth birthday with a flower portrait in the flower beds near a central intersection. The Nowery depiction serves as a summer safety reminder to school children visiting the area.

Rockwood tops Bradford to even O R S A playoff series

Rockwood and Bradford split the series as Rockwood wins 4-2 at Rockwood Park. John Salmon pitched a two hitter with 13 strikeouts for Rockwood while Elliot took the loss. Rockwood had seven hits led by Durose Beattie and Buczek with key triples and Thatcher and Kelly adding offense.

Acting Medical Officer of Health Named by Halton Council

Dr L Hunter of Milton was named Acting Medical Officer of Health by Halton County Council to fill a short term vacancy. He will serve alongside his regular duties and work up to five hours weekly at a rate of fifteen dollars per hour.

The Grand River Conservation Authority pursues valley land acquisitions to form a green belt along the watershed. Silverwood travels cross Canada to Alaska ends home

Mrs. C. Wilson, with a friend, left July 4 and traveled through Sarnia, Prince Rupert, Haines, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Dawson Creek, Dawson City, Banff, Medicine Hat, Sault Ste. Marie, and returned to Ontario by August 15. She reported storms and good weather and expressed relief at home. Also notes congratulations to the Lindsay couple on their 50th anniversary, visits from Mrs. Norton and Mrs. Bomholt, get well wishes for Mrs. Gordon Smith, a 241 inch rainfall figure for Silverwood, and a report on forest fire causes attributed to carelessness and lightning.

Council notes approve dump lease and regional appointee

At Monday night’s meeting Nallagaweys council retained the township dump lease on land owned by Mervyn Thomson and agreed to raise the lease price. Councillor Allan Kekroan was approved to join Councillor Art Gibston on the Central Ontario Regional Development Commission. The council also directed a retest submission to the Canadian Transport Commission over the removal of the station agent at the Canadian Pacific Railroad Guelph Junction station and gave approval to resurvey the police village of Campbellville.

Asks County study waste

A Halton County committee will study garbage disposal for local municipalities. Deputy Reeve Ron Harris urges cooperative action to keep Halton as a single regional unit, while Reeve F G Oakes warns of extra costs. Wellington County 4-H rep chosen for CNE event

Judy Ellis, one of sixteen Wellington County 4-H Club members, was chosen to attend the Canadian National Exhibition for three days last week.
