Council reviewed a petition from about 250 telepayees seeking amendments to the zoning by law. The petition urged allowing a one story detached garage within front yard setbacks for older homes and other building rules. Council instructed the solicitor to draft amendments and debated rescinding previous motions.
The Baptist congregation faced an unexpected farewell as Rev Charles Brewer accepted an unanimous call to Dresden Baptist Church in Dresden Ohio. After three years serving Acton and Georgetown churches, Gower cited travel strain and chose to pastor a single church. He will preach his farewell this Sunday, marking a hopeful future for both congregations as they continue the Lord's work separately.
The August meeting of the Scotch Block Women's Institute at Ligmy School featured poet Edna Jacques as guest speaker from Campbellville and Mountains Union. She recalled her girlhood days out west and travels across the country, reading several poems. An instrumental by Betty Lawson and a solo by Norma Brown complemented the program before refreshments.
George F E Fl how addressed Acton Rotary Club on citizenship and desirable qualifications of a good citizen. Mr Elliott noted the talk grew from life observations with vivid illustrations, enjoyed by Acton Rotarians. President Geo Mason introduced the speaker and emphasized punctual meetings at 7 30 each night.
Acton plans to improve through traffic as sewer work on the highway nears completion. Main Street sewers are laid and back filling will finish after water services are renewed. Old iron water pipes are being replaced with copper while streets are torn up. At the disposal plant site two cement pours have been made for a $2 foot high divider tank with another pour expected by next Wednesday. Excavations for cement tanks proceed as forms are built and cement is poured. Sidewalk inspectors will find ample room at the site with no cave in risk. soil is clay and heavy gravel.
A fatal two vehicle crash near Silver Creek involved a car and a bus between 2 30 and 3 00 pm Saturday. The wife of Fidon Rachter of Kitchenerr died. Lean and Brown of Kitchenerr were injured and taken to hospital in Guelph with fractures and shock. Irene Jobin received minor injuries. The east bound car collided nearly head on with the west bound bus driven by Gauge Teaumont of Turanta. The wreck required acetylene torches to remove occupants. Bus damage estimated at 400 dollars.
Delong completed a new well on Dtufnagels property at the north end of Main Street Acton. The well drilled to rock shows 100 gallon pace potential with current pumps at 150 gallons per minute and a spring supply nearby with 180 gallons per minute capacity. The water temperature is recorded at 41 degrees. the contractor is Job Graham of Guelph.
Dublin Women’s Institute held its August meeting at No Nassagaweya School with Mrs W Watkins in charge. Roll call offered opinions on recreation for children. A committee was formed to arrange the Georgetown Fair display, with Milton and Acton Fair discussed. Mrs Brown, Halton District President, was guest speaker on patience, stressing “Our work well done, let’s play.” Contests were won by Mrs Brown. a vote of thanks was given by Mrs Near. Lunch and social hour followed.
Acton Pablo Uhitid Commission held a regular meeting with full attendance. They discussed changes planned for the substation to shift from 1000 to 2000 volt service, scheduling the switch for the end of September near the creek to avoid blocking the driveway past the Harter Laboratories loading platform. WFPO will relocate poles when crews are in town. A letter from V Dreh required past due charges. another from National Revenue denied a rebate for poles overhead tank. Requests included moving four poles on Jon Peel Street and widening the road. A delinquent account led to service cut. Sewer plant work continues and hydrant repairs near Agnes and Main Street. One valve must be cut to complete repairs. hydrant moved to clear road. Page continues on Five.
Two workers were buried when a sewer trench collapsed at the corner of two streets. Andrew Johnston and Albert Harris were rescued and sent to Guelph General Hospital with injuries. others received non critical injuries as fire and rescue crews worked to free them. A crowded scene reported delays and concern as the trench cave in halted work and a bank’s collapse risk was noted.
J Goodman of the Automotive Transport Association of Ontario outlines an emergency plan to keep essential services running during a railway strike. He appoints local emergency action committees to work with authorities, urges cooperation of truck owners, and prioritizes milk bread medical hospital supplies and farm products while rail embargoes may be in effect.
The Free Press reports a nationwide rail strike has disrupted delivery, with some subscribers awaiting their copies longer than expected. The paper aims to deliver as many copies as possible to districts, while distant areas such as British Columbia and England face continued delays this week and potentially longer.
Helton County Council backs a settlement plan on equalized assessments after a special session. Oakville and Burlington oppose the proposed figures while Acton and others support using the 1928 base and adding new properties to 1949. Burlington urges a five-municipality committee to reach a proportional split and finish by year end.
The Sewinaning Four Committee met and agreed to begin excavation for the swimming pool this month after reviewing funds on hand. Construction will focus on the main pool, with later installation of pumping and dressing facilities as finances allow. Work will start in the fall weather permitting, using available concrete and fill on the west side near Fairy Take. The pool site lies between the grandstand and the agricultural building, nearest the grandstand.
Mr. Wm. Waller, longtime Beardmore and Co employee for fifty three years, has resigned from his position and sold his Crescent Street home to move to Toronto. A respected veteran, he remained active and hosted a fine garden prize winner, with neighbors wishing him many years of life and leisure.
Joh A. Hambleton, known as Jack, a longtime trainer for Sir Clifford Sifton, died at 70 in St Thomas. He set a world high jump record in 1912 at Ottawa riding Confidence, a horse bred in Halton County, later owned by Sifton. The record stood just over seven feet.
Acton town completes water and sewer upgrades on Mill Street blocks. Final laterals installed copper piping and renewed drains, manholes finished, street leveled, gravel laid, dust settled with calcium. Fire brigade washed edges as workers clear remaining pavement. cafe customers return.
