A pompous traveler staying at a small provincial hotel is awakened by a hotel boy delivering a large envelope. Inside he finds a slip reading Why don't you get up. The guest rouses quickly, puzzled by the notice and the early train reminder.
A wealthy engineer on her country estate is visited by an old friend who struggles to push the front gate. He notes it should be easier to open, but she explains the gate links to the roof water tank and every visitor pumps four gallons of water. The tale ends with a wry line about movers of the world and Noah’s readiness to enter when asked.
An 19th century advert torn from a newspaper extols Hood’s Sarsaparilla as a cure for scrofula and blood disease, Flood’s Sarsaparilla as a family liver tonic, and Dr Fowler’s Extract of Wild Strawberry for bowel complaints. It jokes about women’s ages and sidecombs.
