Balinafad residents seek funds for community hall project

Balinafad residents push to raise 10000 for a proposed 21000 community hall after grants reduce the need. Canvassers work this week as Erin and Esquesing Township each pledge 2500, the Provincial Government 5000, and Ballinafad W I 1000. Extra land was bought at the former hall site, a well drilled and fencing added.

One Month Deadline for New Tannery Glove Shop Opens

Ground was broken at the eastern edge of Vimy Street for a combined tannery and glove works in an 80 by 40 foot building. Julian Zajac and Fra own the business, purchased from the late J. Bert Mowat estate, moving from Main Street to enable in-house leather processing. The plant aims for rapid expansion, with 60 feet of future frontage and full operation underway after a one month build.

Road repairs on Main Street to include creek bridge widening

Godson Construction began a 210,000 project on Main Street, widening the creek bridge by 20 feet, adding a new sidewalk, curbs, gutters, and resurfacing thirty inches of asphalt. The town plans sidewalks recaps in multiple streets and mentions previous RK Beamish resurfacing totaling about 9,214 plus engineering costs.

Police seek woman over four bogus cheques

Local police are seeking an unidentified woman who passed four counterfeit cheques in two stores within eight days. She gave a false name and address and a phony bank account number. Police warn merchants to watch for similar attempts.

Ballinafad seeks $21,000 community hall contract awarded

Ballinafad residents launch a public canvass to raise the remaining $10,000 for a new $21,000 community hall on the Erin Township sideroad opposite Ed Swith’s store. William Hall of Guelph submitted the lowest bid at $20,814. construction to begin once funds meet the amount.

Interview Five Applicants For New Recreation Director

The Acton council approved a seven member recreation committee and authorized the Parks Board to hire a director. Interviews were held Tuesday and Wednesday with one applicant interviewed longer and four more questioned. No decision was reached and a full scale review program is planned. the Parks Board will likely pick a director soon and the council must appoint the recreation committee to approve a by law before hiring.

Elusion Man Apprehended for Turtle Trapping at Fairy Lake

Game Warden Bob Reid arrested an Elusion resident and a man from Hespeler after police observed them using baited lines with floats at Fairy Lake. Authorities seized 46 floats with baited lines and three traps. The pair were to appear in court within a few weeks.

Hatten County Museum Opens With 1200 Visitors

Since July 5 the Hatten County Museum has unofficially opened and drawn about 12 000 visitors. Major Newman reported 300 items on display as cabling and numbering proceed with Ben Case assisting. Finds from a Toronto junk yard include French doors a Gothic window and a bannister rail. An asbestos door is being built for the top of the state to comply with fire regulations.

Injuries Prove Fatal Mrs Gay Dies in Guelph

Mrs Sally Gay of Milton dies from multiple injuries after a two car collision Saturday July 28 two miles southwest of Acton. Her son Alan, 19, remains hospitalized with a broken pelvis. Geoffrey Gay and John Soulier suffer non life threatening injuries. Five passengers in the Soulier car were uninjured. Mrs Gay managed a Simiosaire Sears order office in Milton. Funeral held yesterday at Gaine Anglican Church Milton. Interment Evergreen Cemetery Milton.

Township Council Sets Meeting On Annexation Area Opinion

Township council plans August 24 meeting for residents in the Esquesing annexation area to hear views. Discussion covers trailer license fees of 10 dollars monthly for year-round trailer dwellers and enforcement by the clerk. Building permits issued in July total 111,900.

Margaret Slaven RR 4 Acton taps dancers from Canada and the United States to carry her first place trophy in Highland Dancing. She competed at Maxville Quebec on Saturday and at Upper Ontario events, placing in eight years and under. she eyes further summer contests hoping to add to her medals.

108 Year Old Smith Home Reopens for Acton High School Use

The 1854 Sydney Smith house once known as Farrow P. became a continuation school in 1927. After a 1920s fire and later remodels it opens this fall for upper grade classes, hosting Principal A Hansen and staff, aiding transition to a new Robert Little school addition.
