Construction of the Rein High School addition began with J B Mackenzie and Sons moving in equipment and digging foundations. Rain slowed progress as workers pressed to meet a September deadline while officials awaited final grant approval of 30 000 dollars.
Knox church reports 22 members joined on Sunday morning including 17 by profession of faith and 5 by certificate. A. M. Mc Pherson, Howard Coles and Jack Watkins gave the right hand of fellowship. Rev. A. H. McKennie led confirmation classes. Names include Wayne Aitken Patricia Beerman Lorrain Cleland Jane Cooper Gerald Dick Sally Dick Shirle Greenwood and others. Robert Paul joined by certificate.
Acton H Electric Commission discussed improved lighting on Queen Street East and decided on a mercury vapor fixture change if lighting levels remain low, with possible lowering of the light itself. Park floodlights, training for hydro linesmen, and a $1 083.29 Ontario Hydro payment were noted alongside routine accounts totaling $1 970.28.
Town council decided Tuesday evening to bypass two pressure regulators to allow full capacity in mains during summer. Construction delays persist on Brock and Church streets pending Highways approval. The high school addition grant of 28 percent saves taxpayers $30,000.
Acton council learns the Ontario Municipal Board upheld County Judge George Elliott’s ruling on the former post office assessment. The decision kept the total assessment at $10,000 after prior increases, with original figures rising from $25,475 to $16,600 and then to $15,200 before the OM B dismissal.
Bishop W L Bagnall of Niagara confirmed 27 candidates in the traditional rite at St Alban’s on Sunday. 17 were adults. Presented by Rev D H West, the candidates received certificates after the service as refreshments followed.
The townspeople have welcomed volunteer canvassers with most of the district covered. Missing donors are asked to scavenge a donation at the Bank of Montreal or Acton Home Furnishings. Acton's quota is 1500 dollars and leaders hope the total will be reached with remaining gifts.
At St. Josephs Church Acton on Saturday night April 25 Bishop M A Harrington from Kamloops represented Bishop Ryan of Hamilton in confirming 30 candidates. The ceremony featured red and white gowns, gold crosses, and a Pentecost like decoration with red and white carnations and mums.
About 1000 young rangers are expected this Saturday for the Halton district rally in Acton Park. Daylong activities include cook contests baking and other events, with traditional cake contests and pageant moments.
Acton Parks Board reports soil washout at Glenlea park leaves topsoil gone and large rocks exposed. Board plans seed to curb dust, will inspect area. Roy Arnolt rehired as caretaker at 68 per week starting May 4. Gate attendant ads and floodlight grant inquiry discussed for the park.
Acton schools report two confirmed hepatitis cases at Robert Little school. Dr Archie Bull Halton Medical Officer warns symptoms resemble influenza in early stages and urges precautions, including hand washing, avoiding sharing foods and pencils and notifying family doctors. No other cases in Hallon County. pupils told proper health habits over public address system. washrooms and fountains disinfected more frequently.
